They should've had Elly being the one running after the turkey if they wanted it caught.

Ok, if you think offering about 1/2 of the winning offer is competitive, we're done. We're past the point where discussing this has a point.
The Mets paid what it took to get him.
Reds could have probably gotten him for less than 5 million, since Reds were offering him a starting job, but you can't expect a player for sign for 1/2..
Reds could have easily matched the Mets offer and the Casallinis would have still made plenty of profit.

Not trying to take sides here but memories seem to be a bit fuzzy here regarding Jonathan Villar
He signed with the Mets for 1/$3.55M plus incentives
Bobby Nightengale reported at the time the Reds likely were only offering a minor league deal https://twitter.com/nightengalejr/st...40976984481792

I didn’t go back and look it up, so the fuzziness is true. I do remember there being reports of it being a done deal though. My main gripe isn’t around all of those details. It’s around saying the only logical conclusion is that that Reds were lying the whole time when they said they’d be getting one of the best shortstops out there. There are so many possible factors that we will never know involved, that it’s impossible to say with any confidence they were just flat lying.

Ok, thanks for the correction on the exact numbers. But I think the point stands that the Mets offered him a lot more money . Villar of course would rather have a higher paid bench job than a lesser paying job that supposedly gave him the inside track as a starter.

The bottom line is we're in put up or shut up time for this front office. We'll know over the next month or so if the Reds are serious about making a postseason run in 2024.

Bingo
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Saw where Geno being dealt to the Snakes could lead to a move of Luuis Urias to 3B for the M's and make it more likely they make a move for a 2B. I could see the Reds dealing them India for one of Gilbertm, Miller or Woo. Wouldn't mind Gilbert at all in a wider deal.

If the Ms were smart, they'd leave Urias a 2nd and play India at 3rd if they made a deal. Not sure what the reds would need to add to get any of those pitchers. My guess is that it would be something painful.

Gilbert would probably require one of the better Reds prospects added to India. Miller or Woo shouldn’t cost more than India. They are back of the rotation types.

If I had any of those pitchers, I wouldn't trade any of them straight-up for Jonathon India.

I suspect if India is traded, it'll be for Marco gonzalez and another player. This is what I would do.
I think the Reds would have to give up Steer to get one of their young guns. The Reds could afford it, since a lot of other infielders make Steer redundant.

Steer showed a full season consistent bat last year. 665 PAs, .820 OPS.
That isn’t redundant.
I’d guess Reds will put a very high price in Steer in trade talks.

I'd definitely look for a late-inning relief arm or a RH OF who demolishes LH pitching.
Those are two solid "gets" for India, IMO.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
The thing is the Reds aren’t really in a position to trade offense for pitching.
They are weak on both sides. Just because they have developed some young infielders doesn’t mean they can trade a guy like Steer away. They need to stockpile players like him. Their outfield is weak and they don’t even have enough bodies to power the DH spot. This is why they can’t just give India away, either.
I’m fine with trading India, but they’ll need to go find an offensive piece that better complements this team if they do.
