Agree. Logan Gilbert may be among the ten most valuable players in MLB. Not only is he really good; he has four years of control. I suspect the holdup with an India trade is that he's not valuable enough alone to get a pitcher who would make a difference. He's got to be at least paired with somebody for at least two players in return, and that makes for a complicated deal. I can well imagine the FO did offer him at the deadline for Singer, but the Royals wouldn't do that (rightly in my view).

They are weak on both sides. Just because they have developed some young infielders doesn’t mean they can trade a guy like Steer away. They need to stockpile players like him. Their outfield is weak and they don’t even have enough bodies to power the DH spot. This is why they can’t just give India away, either.
I’m fine with trading India, but they’ll need to go find an offensive piece that better complements this team if they do.
That's pretty much where I'm at. Why weaken the team by trading offense for pitching when they have such a low pay roll heading into 2024? The only way that makes sense is if they're planning on having a payroll under 50 million or they trade prospects for pitching. Trading from the MLB team just creates more holes. So if India is moved they will need to add at least one more good offensive player in FA.
I would be happy if they could move India and a Richardson type prospect for Woo, but Gilbert talks likely start with Marte or McLain, and if we're lucky end up at Steer. I don't see the Mariners being motivated to move any of their SP with a prospect as the headliner.

Am I the only one that remembers last year? The Reds aren’t weak on offense. Sure they played a little over their heads in June and July but I feel like people are only remembering the last six weeks of the season when McLain and India (and Fraley to some degree) were out.
Call me an optimist but I think this team next year should have a well above average offense, and even the pitching could be average or better with one addition, assuming everyone stays healthy.

I don't think they're weak, but if they trade India, have one or two injuries, and a sophomore slump or two it could get ugly. I think it's important to have some veteran depth behind all these young players. Elly was a mess to close the year, McLain and Benson had .400 BA bip which is unlikely to sustain, CES has discipline issues to work on, and I'm not sold on Friedl being an .820 OPS bat moving forward.
I think India is one of the Reds players likely to be better in 2024 than he was in 2023. So yeah this could be a great offense if the young guys keep improving, but it's not hard to see it hitting a snag or two next year especially if the depth is thin.

They were a bit below average last year, but look better than that because of GAB.

Edit: the reds offer must have been competitive too. The word was he had signed with the Reds and the Mets swooped in at the last moment and got him. With what was likely an overpay. The situation doesn’t prove much of what you’re saying it does.
This is another year they faded down the stretch again because they did nothing at the deadline. They could have got a few relievers or a Shortstop and chose not to because of money. I guess the money they budgeted for that shortstop disappeared or what do you think the reasoning was?

Never draw permanent conclusions from one year of prospect performance.
Three seasons ago Jon India was Rookie of the Year. Today some view him as trade bait.
The Reds offense, as it stands, has good potential. That’s as far as I’d go.

That isn’t redundant.
I’d guess Reds will put a very high price in Steer in trade talks.
I have always felt that if the Reds truly wanted to take a huge step towards “fixing” this team, Steer is the guy to build a package around. A package of Steer, Collier, and Hines would land either a quality TOR starter or a full-time RH OF with some thump against both RH and LH pitching. That package might even land a decent bullpen arm in the deal.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Steer and his bat. And I think he’s only going to get better. But with all the other young talent coming up, I believe he’s the best talent the Reds could offer to land genuine players that legitimately moves the needle for this team.

India is considered trade bait mostly because the Reds have developed so many young bats. The fact that he’s being mentioned in trade considerations is a sign of how strong the Reds infield is, not really a cautionary tale.

India. Hasn’t reached .750 OPS last two years. Poor defender at his position. That’s why he’s trade bait. If he had come close to his rookie season, things would be different.

You’re leaving out he was injured both seasons. He’s the one being discussed in trade talks because he is the closest to free agency.

I’d argue it’s both factors. Prospects fall off after good rookie seasons frequently. It’s not so much cautionary as a fact. A very high percentage of players wash out and one season isn’t really a guarantee of much of anything.
If you counted on one season of stats to make an impression, then people would be anxious to move Elly, but we know the potential is there so we wait.

I’m not sure if India is included in discussions because he’s getting close to FA or because he seems to be getting closer to fading into a Nick Senzel-like career injury trajectory and they think right now his trade value is as high as it’s going to be. And if they can say some nice things about Jonathan India, like “He’s the heart and soul of this team” and capitalize on that ROY season three years ago, it might bring a bigger return.

I think that’s fair. Plantar fasciitis is a serious injury that can derail a career. However, it India can get healthy, I am rather confident that his production would be similar to his rookie year.

Being injury prone isn’t a good thing.
