I remember this video well….Round and Round - Ratt. I saw them opening for Biily Squier on his Signs of Life tour when I was 17 in the Fall of ‘84.

62. He called "Heads" and it was Heads. He won the coin toss, reportedly, saying, "That's the first time I've ever won anything in my life." But winning the coin toss turned out to cost him his life.
Who won the flip of a coin but lost his life as a result?
63. What is the shortest song ever to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 ? It was 1 min. , 37 seconds of pure bliss. GREAT song!!!
64. Two guys, one from Liverpool and one from Texas, found themselves at the same party in Hollywood. It was a high brow event but both guys were dressed in jeans and t-shirts, so they gravitated to each other. They became fast friends, started writing songs, and formed a band. Their bass player would later go on to become a well known soap opera star. The name of their band came about as band members were watching an old movie and noticed a term used for the actors in the movie credits. They dropped in "s" in the word and their band name was born.
Their signature song is a great one, featuring great vocals, some killer riffs , and one really, really high note. In the late 70's, it reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for three weeks. The song is licensing Gold, and has been used in many commercials, including one for Hooters , during the pandemic , and an older ad for a Swiffer WetJet. The song came about as a result of a conversation two of the band members had with one another about their recent difficult breakups. We've all pined over our lost loves , haven't we? Why in the hell didn't I write this song ?
Who's the band and what's the classic song?
Yep, it was Ritchie.
,
Waylon willingly gave up his seat to J.P. , who was ill. The original occupants were supposed to be Holly , Jennings and , guitarist, Tommy Allsup. Jennings voluntarily allowed the Big Bopper to have his seat, while Ritchie asked Tommy if he could have his seat. Tommy didn't want to give up his seat on the plane, so a coin was flipped. Ritchie won...and then lost...BIGTIME.
I always found young Ritchie's words after winning the coin toss pretty sad and haunting: "I've never won anything before in my life."
Also, that night after the show in Clear Lake and after Waylon had agreed to let the Big Bopper fly in his place , Holly jokingly said to Waylon, "I hope your ol' bus freezes up. " In response, Waylon quipped back , "I hope your ol' plane crashes."
Waylon said, even though they were said in jest to his friend, those words haunted him every day of his life after that night.
65. The Bee Gees began their amazing run of disco success with their #1 hit "You Should Be Dancing" in 1976. I bet you'll never guess in a million years the rock superstar who played timbales on that record? I won't give you a million years to think on it but I will give you a day or so.
Hint: He is primarily known as a member of a threesome...or foursome.
Stephen Stills was recording an album in the same studio complex in Miami when the Bee Gees were recording Children of the World . He dropped in on the Bee Gees session and loved the song. He thought it was a sure fire chart topper and wanted to play percussion on the record. Stephen Stills has noted that "You Should Be Dancing" was his first platinum-selling single.

Don't know about you all but I have a hard time seeing Stephen getting down to this song on a disco floor, but apparently the song hit all the right notes for him. He loved this song.
"All day long , wearing a mask of false bravado." That's a favorite lyric of mine. We've all worn that mask, haven't we?

1:37 seconds , one second shorter than Elvis' "Teddy Bear." Hit #1 in November 1960 , about two months after my parents got married.

66. This singer / songwriter had but one #1 hit, but it was a memorable one. The song was inspired by a poem written by the singer's wife about her distant relationship with her father. The singer adapted the poem after his own son, Josh , was born. The chorus was inspired by nursery rhymes like "Hey Diddle Diddle" and Little Boy Blue." The singer died in his 1975 Volkswagon Rabbit.
Who was the singer/songwriter and what was his #1 hit?
Peter Beckett of Player still sings and performs. He can still hit that high note in "Baby Come Back." He's a really fine musician. Great songwriter and guitarist.
67. I was listening to an old Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown earlier tonight and heard a song being played that I haven't heard in probably forty years, or more. I liked the song a lot back in the day but had forgotten about until tonight. So I thought I'd make a trivia question out of it and see if my RZ music junkies can name the song I heard , along with its singer/writer .
The song was #10 on the countdown on tonight's program but it ended up peaking at #7. To give you an idea of the year the song was on the charts I'll tell you that "Mandy" by Barry Manilow was the new #1 song on the countdown I listened to tonight.
About the singer/songwriter : He was a millionaire by the time he was 16 years old, and things only got better from there.
He wrote songs for the likes of Sinatra, Sir Tom Jones, Buddy Holly and Michael Jackson. He wrote Sir Tom's "She's a Lady," Buddy Holly's last single release "It Doesn't Matter Anymore, " and he wrote the theme for "The Tonight Show," starring Johnny Carson. By the way, he gave all of his royalties on the Buddy Holly song to Buddy's widow.
As far as the top 10 song I heard tonight , he sang it as a duet with a lady by the name of Odia Coates . This might help : OMW/OWM .
Can you name the song and singer/songwriter?
68. If you are a guy around my age, I know you remember Scottish singer, Sheena Easton. Come on, don't pretend you didn't like her back in the day. Sheena's debut single went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, when originally released in the UK was titled "9 to 5." However, to avoid confusion with Dolly Partin's song of the same title, the title of the song was changed when released here in America. What was this Sheena Easton debut smash hit?
69. After her early success with her wholesome, "girl next door" image, Sheena significantly changed her image , reinventing herself with a sexier, edgier, more mature persona, achieving multiple #1 hits across multiple genres in the mid 80's. Remember the song, "Sugar Walls"? Sure you do. Don't even try to deny it. lol
"Sugar Walls" made the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy Fifteen " list, ranking #2 on the "most offensive" songs of 1985. Btw, I wasn't offended. In fact, I owned the record. I was a lustful 23 y.o. , gimme a break. lol
Anyway, look at the single below for "Sugar Walls." If you look close, you will see that a dude named Alexander Nevermind was credited as writer and producer of the record.

Who was "Alexander Nevermind" ?
I remember Morning Train well. It was early 1981 - back when some radio stations combined Top 40 Pop with AOR/Mainstream Rock (like WLS in Chicago and fictional WKRP). Those were the days.
I have no idea about the songwriter for Sugar Walls. But, as a then-17 year old , I nearly drove off the road the first time I heard it. The lyrics really pushed the envelope for it’s time.

Did you know Paul Anka wrote this song?

Back to "Sugar Walls," which was ranked by PMRC as the #2 most offensive song of the year(1985). The song was written and produced by Alexander Nevermind. Mr. Nevermindwas busy being dirty in '85. He had the #1 most offensive song of the year, according to PMRC. Once you figure out who Mr. Nevermind is, you might come up with the most offensive song of the year, according to Tipper Gore, head of the PMRC at that time. Tipper caught her 11-year-old daughter listening to the lyrics of the song which mentions a "sex fiend" and "masterbating with a magazine." It was this song that directly led to Tipper forming the the Parents Music Resource Center , which advocated for putting warning labels for offensive content on albums.
70. Name the dirtiest song of '85 according to Tipper Gore , but loved by her 11 year-old daughter, Karenna Gore, who was especially intrigued by the masturbation reference?
Anka - penned song that was released just 29 days before Buddy died in the plane crash.

The guy knew how to write a pop song.

I prefer the Linda Ronstadt version off of Heart Like a Wheel. That whole album just slays my heart.

Was there ever a singer that was a more natural beauty than Linda Ronstadt? Just a gorgeous woman. Linda , and my girl , Nicolette Larson , were very close friends and even lived together for a time. Two incredibly talented beauties, naturally beautiful ladies... AND supremely talented.
71. Let me tell you a little story and you can tell me the name of the song I reference in the story. There were these guys hanging out around Jacksonville about 1965. They played music , mostly instrumentals , along with some surfer tunes and other popular songs of the day. They called themselves The Classics. Anyway, after discovering that there was already a band by that name they decided they needed a new name and also a new home. They rebranded the group and moved to Atlanta, which was kind of the hub for the burgeoning southern rock scene at the time.
One day in 1967, one of the band members and the band's manager/producer played a round of golf and then headed back to the studio. On the way back, a song came on the radio that had been getting a lot of airplay down South. It was an instrumental song by a local saxophonist named Mike Sharpe. The guys started discussing the song they were hearing and thought it would be a great tune if lyrics were added to it. That's what they proceeded to do . They worked tirelessly to get the exact guitar sound they wanted, added an eerie whistle for effect, and brought in the originator of the tune(the saxophonist) to do the distinctive sax solo. The band's lead singer worked to learn how to project his voice in a way that would match the song's seductive and eerie vibe.
The song was released late in October of 1967 and climbed the charts, peaking at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 early in 1968. After a couple of more big hits, the band's guitarist and keyboardist left to form another band in 1970. This band scored several more hits in the '70's, including taking a new version of this same song into the Top 20 in 1979.
Do you know the name of this classic song that was a Top 10 song in '68 AND a Top 20 in 1979 . Also, what was the name of the 70's group that took it to #17 on the Billboard chart in '79?
72. BONUS QUESTION--- In 1970, a sultry British singer, known for her seductive, soulful style , covered the song and took it into the Top 40 in the UK. In her version, she flipped the gender of the character in the song from a female to a male. Her version was never released as a single in the US but did very well outside of the U.S. Who is she?
73. What is the biggest selling album to have never reached #1 on the Billboard 200 or even to have a single enter the Top 30? The album has sold over 27 million copies in the US and over 50 million worldwide but never had a Top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been RIAA-certified 25x platinum. Can you name the album?
74. What singer once had a song that sold over 33 million physical copies, never made a penny from the record, and only performed it one time?
Rev, goreds2, Roy, and other music junkies , let me know which version you like the best. All of them are pretty cool.

75. This song was written after the writer/lead singer had drank a gallon of Red Mountain wine. When he played it for the band's drummer, he slurred the words to the song's title . The drummer wrote down the drunken phonetic spelling, and the band decided to keep it, feeling it fit with the song's mystical vibe. LMAO The song also included a snippet of the hymn, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."
The extended 17-minute album version was recorded from a sound check. This extended version features a lengthy organ and drum solo, with the drum solo alone lasting over two minutes. The track took up the entire second side of the album, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The single peaked at # 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Can you name this song, which was birthed from the bottom of a gallon jug of Red Mountain wine? Also, what was the intended original (non-inebriated) title of the song and what was the name of the band?
