Reds are 7-3.
Just one game behind the Dodgers and Brewers for home field throughout the NL playoffs.
Looking at the run differentials in the standings, and it's pretty funny being 7-3 with a negative diff. Those Dodgers/Brewers/Yankees run diffs are impressive...yet they have almost the same record as the Reds.
Advanced metrics not too kind to Reds. Offense has been terrible. Reds with lowest BA with RISP and with men on base. But there are some pretty nice items underlying the 7-3 record -
1. Seven of 10 games played Reds allowed 3 runs or fewer.
2. Three shutouts, a one run allowed game, a two runs allowed game, all wins.
3. Reds lead MLB both in saves, 6, and holds, 13.
4. No errors in ten games.
5. Reds allowed 30 runs, third fewest in MLB, some teams already over 60 runs allowed.
6. Reds fourth best in ERA+.
7. Reds mid-pack in DPs converted with 18, last year dead last.
Elly De La Cruz hit a ball 20 feet into the ground — and turned it into a double

Do you know how impressively you have to hit a baseball that goes almost straight into the ground to then turn it into a double?
Cincinnati Reds superstar Elly De La Cruz demonstrated such a swing on Monday night.
He hit a grounder that couldn't have gone more than 20 feet in front of the plate before it's initial contact with the earth.
It was hit so hard, though, that it zipped through the infield.
Still, the centerfielder played it well. Most hitters would be happy with a hard-hit single. Not Elly.
He showed off his blazing speed to race to second with a double.

Statscast has an expected team wOBA of .311 (18th in MLB) compared to the team's actual wOBA of .286 (26th in MLB). So there's probably been a little bit of bad luck so far as to why the offense has looked so putrid.
On the other hand, huge gap between the team's expected ERA (26th in MLB) and actual ERA (5th in MLB) to where the pitching has gotten better results than what the inputs say they should.
All in all, it's 10 games and I'm glad the Reds are 7-3.
This doesn't get enough response from fans.
Clean innings-- stacked one after another-- is a key to winning baseball. While DRS doesn't yet show it, if the Reds continue to work error-free, it will.
Too, individually, some of the hitters have been rather unlucky. Stephenson, for example, is doing everything he can-- he's not swinging at bad pitches (93rd percentile!) and hitting the ball hard (95.2 average exit velocity 96th percentile) but is .167/ .200/ .417/ .617 in 24 ABs. If he continues to hit like that, those numbers will jump. Ditto McLain, who's chasing even less, walking much more, and hitting the ball nearly as hard, but with little to show for it.
One thing about clean defense is that it avoids extra pitches and extra high leverage situations. Jocketty used to emphasize this. IMO it’s especially important in the infield. This would be Reds’ rationale for acquiring Hayes, and while I didn’t like that trade, it’s worth noting.
Also would note that Reds pitching has one of the largest E-F gaps, -.98, meaning that ERA is much better than FIP. That implies defense and luck are helping run prevention. But even if Reds run allowance is a bit lucky, they have a quality staff and run prevention should remain a plus.
Man, I came here to feel good and you guys are like, well, the advanced metrics actually say we kinda suck and are getting lucky.
Kidding! I would much rather have this than have a crazy-good win differential, but losing pretty much every close game. 7-3 is fun! Let's make it 8-3.
I have to think Reds are considering a move of Hinds and/or Bleday to the big club.
There really isn’t very much to lose. The outfield isn’t productive and isn’t special defensively. If Hinds and/or Bleday don’t hit, so you change things again.
There are a number of ways to do it. I wouldn’t mind seeing Marte go to AAA to become a CFer. But we’re getting close to a change, I think.
Hinds for sure. Especially when Tito told Hines personally ... and then told the media ... "Rece did enough to make this team (out of spring). But the role would have been a backup role and we want him to play."
Then he goes down and continues raking at AAA. I think Hines > Marte. And I expect it to happen relatively soon.
Somebody mentioned they'll probably try to keep Marte up until his stupid bobblehead day, which is probably true. I do vaguely a similar situation happening before, when they actually did send the guy down so he wasn't on the team during his bobblehead day, but I can't remember who it was (or if I just hallucinated that memory entirely).
While it's true the OF hasn't produced a whole lot, I will say that Friedl's heating up a bit and even so, his OBP the last week (6 games) is .391....

Meanwhile, down on the farm...
I only want those guys up here if they're gonna play every day. Otherwise, leave them to keep on track, please!
Reds suck, they should be 10-0
The broadcast did just shed light on the Marte situation. He was dogging it during the spring and is in the dog house. Tito had to deal with Manny and those Sox teams so I trust his judgment on these things.
Isn't it the least that KBH could do would be to sac bunt??

So after this game 6 of the 9 starters in today's lineup had BAs under the Mendoza line and only one was over .250 but they are still are 8-3. These are not the Reds of the Aughts.
Cincinnati Reds Win 5th Straight After Late Rally To Beat Marlins

If anyone thought all those early-seasons wins with so few early-season runs was some kind of mirage or magic trick, get a load of what the Cincinnati Reds pulled out of their ballcaps against the Miami in Game 11.
Throttled on two hits by Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara for 8 1/3 innings, the Reds rallied in the ninth to tie, then beat up the Marlins bullpen for four in the 10th – Matt McLain delivering the big blow with a bases-loaded double off the wall – for the unlikeliest victory in a fortnight full of them for this team.
And don't look now, but the Reds are in first place, tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the National League Central, with a mere 151 games to play.

Tonight and tomorrow Marlins are throwing RHP with reverse splits. Tomorrow afternoon’s pitcher, Max Meyer, is especially prone to RHH. Lifetime RHH batting .911 OPS against him.
If Reds plan to rest some guys with a night game followed by a day game — I’d make sure the main RHHs are in the lineup tomorrow afternoon against Meyer.
We normally agree on a lot but I guess my question here is do you think the team would be 11-0 without him instead of 8-3.
I guess I am not seeing Barry Bonds on the bench which is what it would take to replace Hayes and bring the offense up enough to make a difference. The offense as a whole is bad and there isn't one guy on this team that is making up for the team as a whole. The team has been excellent on defense and having solid play at 3B is a part of that which helps the pitchers get out of innings faster and not make the anemic offense have to score a ton of runs.
Of all the issues with this team I really think that Hayes is pretty low on the list.
Trevino to DL, PJ Higgins called up, CES DFA.
Shocked to see that.
CES will be claimed.
I’ll bet we can find a trade partner. We can get a lower-level minor league lottery ticket pitcher with a big fastball. Let’s go.
There are a handful of bad teams that would probably give CES a long look this year.
Some kind of spine issue for Trevino.
Looks like Reds gave up on CES. Interesting.
Doesn't sound like a good injury for a catcher. I wonder why they decided on Higgins and not Will Banfield? Seems like Banfield would have been the choice. In looking at their stats it looks like Banfield was the starter in Louisville and Higgins was the backup
CES gave a certain vibe i really liked. Nick Esasky. Lot's of power and line drives, a guy you would not be surprised to look at and see he's hitting .340 or something. Never got healthy. I think a team needing a 1B/DH just might take a flyer on him at the MLB level, but if they can deal for him, that's better for the Reds.
I had high hopes for an IF of CES, McLain, EDLC and Marte. I'm beginning to wonder if Marte will stick in the OF.
I think it's the right call to cut bait on CES. Probably not too far off from that point with Steer for that matter, though he probably doesn't get replaced until the summer unless it gets real bad. It was fun to imagine getting two good regulars in that Mahle trade but you can't let that hope still shade things years later.
I'm not predicting... so much as, well ok I am predicting.
He could squeak through waivers. Not like the Reds have a guy ready to take his place. But I won't be stunned if COL or SEA take a flyer on him. Maybe the White Sox.
