I recently learned that users have experienced site-wide slowness at or around 10:00 PM EST each night. Once this came to my attention, I opened a ticket with our host, and they identified the problem as a daily monitoring tool that was running each day at that time. They've since rescheduled the time down runs, so it should resolve the issue. Please don't hesitate to let me know (here or via IM) if you continue to experience any problems.
