20196 Reds' affiliates' playoff thread...
The DSL playoffs are underway.
The DSL Reds have split the first two games in the series. They won the opener 2-0 behind the stellar pitching of Jose Franco (5 IP), Eddy Alcantara (1 IP), Nestor Lorant (2 IP) and Andry Cuevas (1 IP). Franco has been the staff ace this season, compiling a 2.20 ERA in 57.1 innings on the mound. He has struck out 59, and yielded one lone home run. Cuevas has been the team's closer this season, and did the job once again, striking out the side in the 9th. He has allowed just 19 hits over 43.2 innings.
Offensively, Wilmer Alcantara singled and doubled twice. He also stole a base. Junior Tamares singled and walked. Alcantara, just 17, has come on strong late in the season. After OPSing .612 in June, and .509 in July, he scorched DSL pitching for an OPS of 1.058 in the month of August.
The DSL Reds fell in the second game of the series 4-3. Martin Salazar was let down by his defense, allowing 4 runs over 5 innings of work, but just one of them was earned. Elkyn Chirinos came out of the pen and posted 3 hitless innings.
Junior Melo was the man at the plate, going 3 for 4.

Billings is closing in on a playoff spot. Winners of 4 in a row, they have a 5-game lead with 11 to play in the second half. The Mustangs have really turned their season around. After starting off 1-8 (sound familiar?), they have gone 34-22.
Re: 20196 Reds' affiliates' playoff thread...
The third (and rubber?) game in the DSL Reds series was suspended in the top of the 8th, with the score tied up at 4 apiece. Hurricane Dorian? At any rate, the Reds were down 4-zip, before scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th. The box score is inaccessible at this time. However, the DSL Reds have 4 runs on just 2 hits.
Re: 2019 Reds' affiliates' playoff thread...
It would seem that Jose Acosta is back in the Dominican Republic for this series. He was brought to Arizona and played 10 games, compiling a line of .370/.396/.478/.874.
Reds scored their 4 runs on walk, single, walk, walk, wild pitch, wild pitch and single. Apparently, they were no hit through six innings and trailing 4-0 heading into the 7th. Nice comeback.

Billings won their 5th straight last night, and now have a 6-game lead with just 10 games to go. However, 6 of those 10 games are against the team chasing them, the Missouri Osprey.

The Reds were hitless until the 7th.
Never mind. I missed post #4.

Does this thread mean the Reds won't make the play-offs until 20196? Talk about tanking.

At the earliest.
Re: 20196 Reds' affiliates' playoff thread...
The DSL game resumed with runners on the corners and one out for the D-Backs. Missed the play by play, but the Reds got out of it undamaged, so still 4-4.
Reds get a walk but that's it, heading to the 9th tied at 4.
D-Backs go down 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th.
Reds go down quietly in the 9th and we're getting bonus baseball in the Dominican today
Well it could've been worse since the D-Backs had runners thrown out at home and 3rd, but they still scored twice to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the 10th.

DSL Reds got out of the 8th-inning jam with a strike'em out, throw'em out. The batter struck out with the runner on first on the move. They pegged the ball to second, and then a quick throw back to the catcher nabbed the runner racing for home.
Re: 20196 Reds' affiliates' playoff thread...
Despite throwing out runners at both third and home, the Diesel Reds gave up a pair of runs in the top of the 10th. Rally caps on as they have come back to place runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Top of the order coming to bat.
A ground out makes it 6-5, as the runner moves over to third. One away.
Strike out. Ground out. Ball game.

What a coincidence -- the Big Red Machine runs on that too. :D

Bummer, I had high hopes for the Diesel Reds with their ringer (Acosta) back in the fold.

Florida State League cancels remaining games, including postseason
Quote:
The Daytona Tortugas have officially been eliminated from playoff contention, but it wasn’t the Clearwater Threshers or Lakeland Flying Tigers who did it.
Instead, it was Hurricane Dorian.
With the tropical storm closing in on the state, the Florida State League announced on Thursday that the remainder of the season, along with next week’s postseason, has been canceled. Thursday night’s regularly scheduled game between the Tortugas and St. Lucie Mets will now serve as the season finale for both teams.
