I know Dusty had a habit of not putting someone in the lineup for a day or two after coming off the DL. He also never seemed to want to play anyone who was just called up.
Price would do the same.
I don't remember enough about Pete Mackanin to say.
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Jim Day put too much time and enthusiasm into this Suarez vs Suarez matchup.
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
A fielder can misplay a ball so badly that the official scorer cannot charge an error on the play.
However, I don't think that this was one of those cases. Should have been an E7.

I even think it tipped off his glove.

I think the call was consistent with the usual. Not saying it’s fair, but usually a misjudged fly to outfielder is a hit.
Muffed fly ball hit right to him, or if glove touches ball, usually an error.
I think scorer doesn’t presume outfielder can get to ball if he has to run and doesn’t get there.

Touching a ball does not necessarily mean an error should be charged, nor does not touching a ball mean that an error shouldn't be charged.
But yes, it did tip off Herrera's glove, and it should have been ruled an E7.

Error is far more likely to be called if ball hits glove.
Not always, but that seems to be the custom.
If Hamilton dives for it and tips it, no, then error won’t be called.
If ball hit Dillon’s glove on today’s play it would be usual to call an error there.
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Dealson single and Casali double to tie it up!
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
bottom of the lineup getting things done
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Nice job at the bottom and good contact by Billy to get it in
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Would rather see Peraza here....
Edit: But Billy got it done

I agree with that assessment. It really goes as to whether the play should have been made with "ordinary effort". If so, then an error should be charged. If not, then the play is a hit.
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Billy isn’t on so Peraza probably gets on
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
Go oppo Scooter and avoid the DP!
Re: 8/19/18 Giants vs. Reds
