2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
The other two Bengals threads are near the 1,000 post threshold so I figured I’d start this one for the draft and after.
-
Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
So in the previous thread I predicted the Bengals would make the mistake of not drafting (or drafting and trading) Joe Burrow. Based on the moves this off season and the pre- draft chatter, I'm withdrawing that prediction. The Bengals will draft and keep Burrow, and that is definitely the right move for them.

Stoked for the Burrow era. The excitement about his arrival gives me something to distract me in these times as well.

Me too. I can’t wait. If you have a great franchise QB, your floor is still pretty high. And everything doesn’t have to be perfect to make the playoffs. Both of those facts make Mike Brown really really happy. And fans like me.

I'm treating Thursday night like a Super Bowl party. Food, my kids will watch, Zoom with some family/friends for a bit.
I truly believe the franchise wins it's first Super Bowl the instant they take him. Burrow is that special - he'll get them there.

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Given I’ve been stanning for Burrow since November and originally was flying to Vegas to see it in person, you all know how giddy I am.

I think at the very least they break the playoff streak. I do agree with Manning that he’ll struggle his rookie season but after 2-3 years it should peak. Anything else is gravy.

I was talking to a friend yesterday about the luck of the Reds and the Bengals. The Reds finally have a good squad then shutdown. The Bengals have the first pick and the Vegas draft is cancelled. And, we don’t have to bring up either team’s history. I remember you and SeaRay mentioning that you’re going to the draft, but there was a little risk involved. Could the Bengals possibly mess up the #1 pick and the draft? Incredibly, something else has.

Seriously, I should have figured - "yeah, plague" as the alternative to the Bengals doing the right thing and staying steadfast on taking Burrow...

Source: Bengals have informed Joe Burrow he’s their pick
Quote:
Heisman-winning quarterback and national champion Joe Burrow will be the No. 1 overall pick by the Bengals on Thursday night, a source told FOX19 Now.
That same source close to the situation said the Bengals informed Burrow of their intent to make him their top pick during extended conversations in recent weeks.
“We talked to a lot of guys, but certainly formed a really good relationship with Joe, and have been really impressed with everything we’ve seen from him," said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor on ESPN Wednesday morning.

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
In case people even think there is the slightest chance of Burrow not being a Bengal, he has been informed that he is there pick.

Is it too soon to rename St. Rt. 32 as "The Joe Burrow Highway"?

I am gonna go with...no. Let's do that.
Will raise a glass and celebrate with you all virtually tomorrow night - we deserve some happiness as a fanbase wherever we can find it. Appreciate the chance to celebrate with my fellow bengals fan friends some good news.

OK I'm not a big fan of mock drafts, but I do them in order to be familiar with the players available. I went ahead with a PFF mock and this was the result. Note I passed on Becton at the top of the 2nd round to trade down.

I'd be livid if the Bengals did that for real.
Becton is one of the top tackles in the draft.
His upside is of a perennial All-Pro.

I’m thinking he could possibly slide now with the drug test and the Bengals would be the team to take him.

Yeah I passed because I don't think he'd actually be there.

Beware the PFF mock tends to slide players a lot if they don’t fit PFFs idea of a high value position - so if you are trying to get a sense of who might be available - may want to run some on TDN as well. The linebackers going that late seems unlikely. And for sure Prince Tega isn’t a late 4th rounder...

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Really gonna be fun watching round 1 unfold and having 21 hours to contemplate who is available at 33 and if trading back would make sense. Anyone got any predictions for a surprise first round pick that isn't generally talked about as a first round pick? How about this - Clyde Edwards Helaire 32 to the Chiefs. Dear lord he would be devastating in that offense and with Mahomes...
-
Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
It has been enjoyable watching the narratives from Dan Patrick Show and PFT and others with regard to Burrow and the Bengals die on the vine the last few days.
-
Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Can't say I'll watch any of the draft, but super hyped about Burrow becoming a Bengal.
Still looks like a patchwork line though, even with Williams returning.

Lloyd Cushenberry. I mocked him to the Patriots.
Should be a 2nd or 3rd round pick but I could see Seattle or New England taking him and nobody questioning it.

That's a fun guess. Could see that.

How much do the Bengals like Joe Burrow? While they got a few calls from teams looking to trade up, back in Feb. & March, at this point they are not even pretending to entertain offers. As one source put it “we could just turn our ringers off on our phones” in regards to a trade
-

@diannaESPN Even though everyone including Joe Burrow can connect the dots, sources say the Bengals want to wait until they are on the clock to make it official with Burrow. Cincy wants to give the #1 overall pick that moment to get the call from the team on draft night. #Bengals
\
That's pretty cool, actually, for them to give him that moment.

I really hope they get a G/T type in round 2 or 3. Especially one who has done that on the right. I wish Isaiah Wilson hadn't gotten such late helium - he was ideal for that spot somewhere in two for quite awhile...

PFF said three people to avoid, as in way overrated by the amateurs..
Becton, Cushenberry and Austin Jackson.

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Mock drafts and talent evaluations are two different animals. Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News was awesome at mocks but he has 48 yrs of NFL contacts. Greg Cosel who I love does mostly talent evaluation, he knows his prospects and is like Kiper and Mayock in preparation. Daniel Jeremiah who worked as a scout and in a front office will do both. The good mock draft folks will hit on 30 percent of their picks...the rest just do it for clicks to their sites.
Hillsdale, that 30% number was made up in your head. Someone quoted here that out of millions of people who entered a contest last season, the winner got 13 out of 32 right, and that's the first round, by far ten times easier than any other round.
Before the draft begins, pick one "expert", who you think is "good" as you say, post his mock, and we'll look at his percentage for each round.
I doubt if "the good" amateurs, and it doesn't matter who they know because guys like Jeremiah couldn't make the right choice if it came down to two people to choose from. If Jeremiah says it, you can be sure that I disregard it. Kiper is a joke around the NFL, as are most media who do mock drafts. There's no way the "good" one's can get 20% of the picks right once outside the Top-10, which any secretary at the office can get as well. I entered the contest once. I got 12. That was in the 96-percentile, again, out of millions who entered.
That quote by Ian Rappaport was a G.M. laughing at these "experts" moreso this year than he laughs at them every year. None of them are experts in evaluating NFL talent. None of them. Even the former members of the NFL. The key here is "former". Once in a blue moon, a draft board is leaked, like the Cowboys was when the Bengals took Atkins.
There's also the problem where the Scouts never make the picks. G.M.'s make the picks and whoever has the most influential voice in the room is how the team leads. Even the board is probably heavily influenced by people who aren't scouts. I think employed NFL scouts know what they are doing. But, it's a long process that can break down anywhere along the way between a scout's assessment and the player's performance over their careers. I don't think the scouts are at fault very much. I think it's the G.M.'s the most. Head Coaches second. Been comparing media mocks for far too long and I find them to be absolutely horrible, at best.

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Because of the social distancing, there has been an awful lot of information that's normally circulated about the draft that simply hasn't been out there this season.

Re: 2020 Cincinnati Bengals Thread Part 2: The Joe Burrow Era is Almost Here!
Finally. Draft day is here. I'm tired scrolling past worthless mock draft predictions that are never right.
I can't believe I'd see the day when I'd rather here guys talk about their fantasy teams.

Mocks are fun but even the best at it are only right 30 percent or less. I do one a year with NFL.com that’s my limit with them.

Houston's Josh Jones may be available at the top of the 2nd round. He'd be fantastic there. If Becton falls, he's a no-brainer. Maybe Ezra Cleveland. After that, I'm waiting or trading back. USC's Austin Jackson isn't worth the 33rd pick. And under-the-radar pick could be Saahdiq Charles from LSU. He's super athletic (5.05 40 time) but a bit small. Had some real issues with pot, but really, so what? He can play guard too. As a multi-positional backup to start his career, then perhaps something more, he'd be a steal in the 4thround.
They may gamble with Louisiana-LaFayette's OG Robert Hunt, one of the top offensive guard prospects in the draft. He profiles as a 3rd round pick-- which seems high for a guard. Damien Lewis (from LSU) is a 4th rounder; he'd be a solid get. I think Logan Stenburg as a 5th rounder would be a solid help to the line. (And that may be a round early.) They saw and liked him at the Senior Bowl, IIRC. Smart, tough, mean streak, and productive, he's massive and has been through the wars in the SEC. Part of an absolutely dominant line as well. OSU's Jonah Jackson is another possibility but at the consensus 102nd spot? That's a high pick for a guard.
Just as a note, Cole Kmet is the top TE in the draft and could be available in the 3rd. He'd be a nice weapon.

PFF is fantastic for the NFL but I find their college analysis to be lacking.
Just for example, the Wisconsin QB was chosen all B1G over Haskins last year. For some reasons their metrics don't translate as well to college as they do to the NFL.

I agree. It seems like college would be a lot more difficult to do statistical analysis for because the level of competition is so much wider than the NFL and the schemes are so much more varied.

I did them for like a year or two in my teens, grew up, and then realized how terrible or inaccurate they all ended up being. Not to mention, an incredible waste of time.

Schefter reported Miami called multiple times over 2 weeks to offer the Bengals a trade...Bengals stood firm. Miami is supposedly moving to 3 tonight.
