Re: When/Where Did You Attend Your First Reds Game? How Old Were You?
1972 Spring Training game at Al Lopez Field as an 8 year old. Don’t remember much about the game, though I do remember walking down to the clubhouse after the game to get autographs on my program.
Re: When/Where Did You Attend Your First Reds Game? How Old Were You?
It was summer 1991, I was 32 and had no knowledge of baseball. I was visiting colleagues at the University of Cincinnati from England and the guys in the lab there said “you gotta see a baseball game while you’re here”. They took me to Riverside to see a game against the Giants. Paul O’Neill hit a grand slam in the first inning and one of the guys turned to me and said “this doesn’t happen every night you know”. It was a big crowd and a great friendly atmosphere and the Reds won 6-2. I still have the game report from the Enquirer somewhere. Anyway, from that day on I have been a big baseball fan in general and of the Reds in particular.

Not sure of my first game, it was probably in 1962 or 1963 at Connie Mack Stadium. Most memorable game was at Connie Mack Stadium, in Philadelphia, in 1969. I saw a double header with the Reds and George Culver pitched a no hitter giving up 1 run.

If the greatest (current and in history) women's pool player of all time has to wait in a line behind me at a burger king, you have less of a chance of becoming a rich, famous pool player than you do becoming the next Nolan Ryan.
I remember Allison Fisher. She liked to wear black. She came to Portland a few times to play poker charity events, one put on by Chris Dudley (he once donated about 1/12th of his annual salary to a medical cause, donated another $300K to set up a graduation program for low-income grade schoolers, and countless other donations he tried not to get in the news ). The taverns I went to in Portland in the '90's won a few National tournaments in Vegas, both 9-ball singles and 8-ball teams.

When your nickname is "The Duchess of Doom", black should be your wardrobe.

Not sure exactly. The first game I remember--or have strong visual impressions of--was with the Pirates and must have been in 1955. I know it was Clemente's rookie year because I sat down the right field line with my mother and father and I was fascinated by Clemente. That was Crosley Field of course. I've gone back and looked at the schedule for that year and I figure it was a game in June. I think I had actually been to Crosley earlier but don't have any distinct visual impressions. I have a lot of memories of 56, especially of my all time favorite Red, Frank Robinson.

8/26/72 Reds vs Phillies. Eight years old. Had never seen anything as magical as Riverfront. Reds lose to Steve Carlton. Perez homers to center off of Carlton late in the game. Bench played right field that night. Yeah, I know, but I swear it’s true.

And, I assume, that Carlton was a jerk to the reporters after that game.

Carlton hadn't stopped talking to reporters in 1972. 1972 was the best year of his career [27-10 with a 1.97 ERA on a last place team]. In 1973 Carlton slumped. After he received criticism, beginning in 1974 his relations with the media soured, and by 1976 he stopped interacting with the press.

Just an aside, Drinking Coffee With a Fork is a very good book about Carlton's 1972 season. Arguably the best season a pitcher ever had considering what a poor team he was playing with. You are right he was still talking to reporters in 1972.

1988 Riverfront vs. Dodgers. True Creature vs. Orel Hershiser at the peak of his powers. Trolleydodgers took it 5-3.

Aug. 14th 1979 at Riverfront. Reds beat the Phillies in 10 innings 2-1. Vic Correll's PH walk-off double scored Ray Knight. Steve Carlton pitched the whole game and Bill Bonham pitched 8 innings. Tom Hume pitched the final 2 innings for the win. Game time was 2:20. Think about that, a 10 inning game was 2 hrs. 20 mins. I remember my uncle talking about Pete Rose coming home to Cincinnati to play although looking at the schedule it wasn't Pete's first trip back to Cincinnati. It was still a big deal with him playing for a team other than the Reds. I started following/cheering for the Reds because of this game and have never stopped.

Now that you brought it up, I have a slight memory of watching Pete return to Cinci after leaving and I believe it was his first game back. I was 21 and back then I blamed the player for leaving rather than the front office. I remember when he came to the plate, I started booing and my older brother(who I don't remember attending very many games with) says something like "Are you kidding, don't boo)" and he stood up and cheered. In hindsight, I would've cheered also and felt stupid for booing him.
I looked up that game, and it also was a Carlton-Bonham match up. In the bottom of the 8th, with the score tied 2-2 Morgan walked with 2 outs to load the bases. NOW GET THIS! Tom Seaver pinch ran for Morgan. I'm guessing Morgan must have hurt himself while in the batters box.
Griffey proceeded to get on via 2 run error and the Reds won. Pete went 0-4 which dropped his BA to .347.
I wonder how many times in Morgan's career he was pinch ran for and by a pitcher.
