Chris Dickerson LF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Joey Votto 1B
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Jay Bruce RF
Jolbert Cabrera 2B
Corey Patterson CF
Paul Bako C
Bronson Arroyo RHP (12-10, 5.07)
Keppinger strikes again. A routine groundball turned into a single.
And now Jolbert Cabrera botches an easy double play. Instead it's only a fielders choice.
I really don't know why Cabrera is on this team.
Nice 5-4-3 DP to end the inning.
Dickerson continues to hit
Dickerson leads off with a line drive single to LF. Is it just me or does it seem like he's always on base?
Dickerson steals 2nd, Kepp bunts him to third.
Nice stolen base, sac, and rbi single
Votto lines a single to left to score Dickerson, 1-0 Reds.
Small ball? Fundamentals?
What be those?
EdE walks on four pitches.
Bruce just misses a double in the corner by a foot...he runs the count to 3-2 and walks. Nice atbat.
Bases loaded and only one out for Cabrera.
Two straight walks so Jolbert Cabrera swings at the first pitch at his eyes.
and then strikes out.
Keppinger really does lack range at SS...
Two-out single from Kepp scores Arroyo! Votto follows with another hit, bringing up Edwin with two on and two out.
Arroyo's scrappy :D
Edwin takes a Rudy to bring up Bruce with the bases full; Cain walks him, forcing in run #3.
Bruce walks in a run. Reds should have about 19 runs in this game.
Must say, watching the team this week, Joey Votto is a terrific young hitter. So consistent, still very young. Hope they can find a spot for Votto going forward, even when Alonso comes up.
Cabrera has another cruddy at-bat, grounding into a force to end the inning. Cain at 59 pitches through two; 3-1 Reds.
Cabrera grounds to SS to end the inning.
Bruce went in hard to second on that play and made it close. I like.
Corey Patterson is back under the Mendoza line again. He should have retired after yesterday's game.
Burris gets his first HR of the season....and of his big league career.
I really appreciate the philanthropy of the Reds' pitching staff, handing *two* powerless Giants their first big-league bombs in this series.
Votto is 3-for-3.
Joey Votto is on fire; he raps another base hit. Average up to .292.
Then Votto gets caught stealing as the Reds give away another out.
...of course, he then catches the same crappy-baserunning bug as the rest of the post-offense Reds.
There's a reason why Kepp has been a journeyman player. You're seeing it here. Play him in spots and he can look awesome, but play him everyday, and you get a guy who is going to hit .260 with no pop and little defensive powress.
The injury IMHO didn't change any of that. He is what his is--a backup.
I don't think Keppinger's injury had anything to do with his subsequent slump at the plate. He's just regressed towards the mean. The real Jeff is somewhere between the Boggsian exploits of 2007 and this year's Oesterisms.
It might have further hurt his already-poor range afield, but since the guy just can't play shortstop in the major leagues I think you'd all be complaining about it regardless of whether or not he'd broken his kneecap.
I hope the Reds keep him and use him as a utility player and pinch-hitter in 2009; he could have a lot of use filling it at six positions. And he'll hit much better than many players of that ilk.
Bruce walks again. He's got three walks today. That's great to see.
You know, our bottom three - Patterson, Bako, and Arroyo are pitiful. In fact, Bronson is the best hitter of the three which is sad. I'll continue my chant--we need offense!
Bases loaded with two outs for Bronson.
