In a Big Country by Big Country
Reading this question, the first song that came to mind for me was...
Purple Rain by Prince
Tough call.
The Soft Cell cover of "Tainted Love" immediately came to mind.
Since I'm only allowed to mention one, that's the one I'd pick.
But I'm open to be convinced otherwise.
How soon is now by The Smiths
I'll be You by The Replacements
Cutting down to one was brutal, but I'll go with Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2
My wife (the former DJ) says On the Turning Away by Pink Floyd
Best Rock Song: Chasing the Night - The Ramones
Best New Wave Song: Heaven - Psychedelic Furs
Best Rap Song: Straight Outta Compton - N.W.A.
School dances: "Can't Fight This Feeling" - Reo Speedwagon
"Sweet Child o' Mine" - played everywhere I went, all the time, for the entire summer of 1988.
Africa — Toto
If we're allowed categories now. . . .
Heavy rock: Perfect Strangers - Deep Purple
Folk-Reggae: Jokerman - Dylan
New Wavish: Senses Working Overtime - XTC
Kiwi mythology as a metaphor for mental illness (so many to choose from): Dirty Creature - Split Enz
Pub Rock: Bow River - Cold Chisel
Best Hair Metal: just kidding!
AC/DC - Back in Black.
Tomorrow I might give a differentt answer.
Talking Heads - once in a lifetime.
Best rap song- Public Enemy - Fight the Power
best Metal song - Metallica - One
Van Halen - Unchained.
Allentown- Billy Joel
Followed closely by Africa (Toto) and Election Day (Arcadia).
When Doves Cry, Prince, not close.
For me, Talking Heads’ This Must Be the Place.
3 song tie so I’m breaking the rule.
Ashes to Ashes - Bowie. Heavy Influenced 80s alternative.
One Tree Hill - U2.
Fight the Power - Public Enemy
Hard to not pick Talking Heads 3 big songs from Remain In Light. Crosseyed and Painless. The Great Curve.
'80' was all about too many drugs, so I'll go with...
"Smuggler's Blues"
Everybody was moving product back then. Even Bill Clinton's brother was moving lots of cocaine from Florida to Arkansas.
"You Belong to the City" also works for me for the '80's. The "A"-side to "Smuggler's Blues" "B"-side.
This is all assuming one can remember the '80's.
Right now I think Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.
close but I will go with:
"Wonderland" by Big Country

I can'r believe "The Safety Dance" hasn't been mentioned yet? :D
Actually mine is this one:

"There She Goes" by The La's is an almost perfect pop song, it was originally released in 1988 but released in 1990 and became a hit, however in my mind it's still an 80's song and one of the best.
False, music from the 80's is terrible and unlistenable!
Metallica - One
More Than This - Roxy Music
My Spouse's:
"Another One Bites the Dust"

[What the Blazers will be doing to each opponent beginning in a month]
Not the best in any way shape or form but this video may be one of the most 80s things in existence. It is "Buscando" by Peruvian singer and actress Yola Polastry. I believe she became a children's music performer. This is a cover of "Protection" which was a song written by Springsteen and released by Donna Summer in Europe in 82. The clothes, the dancing, the blue hair, the "lip synching" make this 3 min 18 seconds of pure unadulterated 80's magic. It is if someone filmed a dress rehearsal for a Ukrainian Ice Capades skit for SNL.

Also I am surprised no one has mentioned "Never Gonna Give You Up."
