League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Time to crank this league back into action for another fun season of fantasy baseball. We had a great year last year. Well, it was a great year for mbgrayson, who steamrolled the rest of us all summer long and pulled away for a 34 point margin of victory. Congrats mbgrayson! What an impressive butt-kicking that was last season.
The rest of us need to boost up our teams and make sure we give mbgrayson a stronger challenge this year. We can't let him win twice in a row can we?
Yahoo fantasy baseball is now open and each of you should have received an email from Yahoo asking you to register and claim your team, so be sure to check the email account you used to sign up last year.
Once everyone gets registered for the league I will be able to add all our players to our rosters. I will need to know which 30 players you want to keep. You most likely had more than 30 players at the end of the season if you had players on the Disabled List. So please send me a list of players you want to cut to get your roster down to 30 men. I will need your reply ASAP.
I am planning a series of posts in this thread to share a lot of cool information about the history of our league, so check back often and share your thoughts and observations. If we can get lots of discussion going in this thread throughout the season it will make the league even more fun.
To make sure you don't miss anything, please subscribe to this thread by clicking on "Thread Tools" at the top of this post, then click on "Subscribe to this Thread", then select "Instant Notification by Email" from the dropdown box.
Good luck with your teams this year!

League of Reds Nation Record Book -- Single Season Records
Code:
Category Total Team Season

Home Runs 282 Atomic Dumpling 2010
RBIs 1058 Atomic Dumpling 2012
Stolen Bases 232 HumnHilghtFreel 2010

WHIP 1.12 Bumstead 2011
1.12 reds1869 2013
Total Points 111.5 mbgrayson 2013
Four of the eleven records were broken or tied in 2013:
- Captain Hook's .287 AVG broke his own record of .285 set in 2012.
- Atomic Dumpling's 1400 Strikeouts smashed Crosley68's record of 1313 strikeouts set in 2012.
- Reds1869's 1.12 WHIP tied the record for best WHIP set by Bumstead in 2011.
- Mbgrayson's impressive 111.5 Total Points obliterated the previous record of 99.5 points set by Iowa Red in 2011.
Some other records were challenged but held up:
- Reds1869's 3.09 ERA almost matched the 3.08 record.
- Mbgrayson's 94 Wins almost reached the record of 96.
- Mbgrayson's 1313 Ks matched the old record but it was only good enough for 2nd place this year to Atomic's 1400 whiffs.
Which record is next to fall and who will do the deed?

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Here are the final point standings for each year of our league. I added up the total points to find the All-Time Standings:
All-Time Standings (Points Method)
Code:
2010 2011 2012 2013 Total AVG Rank
Atomic Dumpling 93.5 92.0 86.0 82.5 354.0 88.5 1
RedEye 67.5 99.5 96.0 34.0 297.0 74.3 2
reds1869 73.0 68.0 66.5 87.5 295.0 73.8 3
mbgrayson 40.5 53.0 90.0 111.5 295.0 73.8 3
HayPay 64.5 74.5 91.0 52.0 282.0 70.5 5
Captain Hook 57.5 87.5 63.0 69.0 277.0 69.3 6
Tornon 66.5 66.0 57.0 81.0 270.5 67.6 7
Crosley68 85.5 55.5 56.0 58.0 255.0 63.8 8
Bumstead 81.5 75.5 56.0 37.0 250.0 62.5 9
Vada Pinson Fan 79.0 27.0 68.5 61.0 235.5 58.9 10
thatcoolguy_22 42.5 44.0 24.0 62.0 172.5 43.1 11
Joseph 28.5 37.5 26.0 44.5 136.5 34.1 12
Ownership changes:
- RedEye is now taking over a team owned by Plus Plus for two years 2012-2013 and previously owned by IowaRed for two years from 2009-2010.
- Crosley68 took over Brutus the Pimp's team prior to the 2012 season.
- mbgrayson took over a team originally owned by HumnHilghtFreel, who ran the team in 2010. The team was adopted by Redsfan320 for the 2011 season, but he abandoned the team in the middle of the season. Mbgrayson took charge in mid-2011 and the team has been kicking butt ever since.
Observations on the Rankings:
- Reds1869 climbed from 6th to 3rd this season.
- Mbgrayson skyrocketed from 9th to 3rd this season!
- Tornon advanced one spot from 8th to 7th.
Biggest Turnaround Seasons:
- Vada Pinson Fan gained 41.5 points between 2011 and 2012. He finished last in 2011 but got up to 5th in 2012 for a sensational turnaround.
- Thatcoolguy_22 leaped 38 points between 2012 and 2013, going from last place to 6th place. Nice!
- mbgrayson went from 53 to 90 points, a 37 point increase, between 2011 and 2012 after taking over the team in the middle of the 2011 season.
- IowaRed (RedEye's team now) gained 32 points from 2010 to 2011 and won the championship that season after finishing 6th the year before.
- Captain Hook made a 30 point jump from 2010 to 2011 and finished 3rd.
This goes to show it is possible to turn around a struggling team quite quickly if you are aggressive, make the right moves and your team stays healthy. There has been a lot of change each season in the All Time Standings. We have seen teams rise and fall tremendously in these ranks over the years. So if your team is near the bottom you can definitely climb to the top easier than it may seem, and if you are near the top you better not get too comfortable because you can plummet quickly.
Later I will post a different form of all-time standings. In that chart I will add up all the individual stat categories and rank each team in each stat, then total up all the ranks to see who prevails using that method. Will it turn out differently than this chart? Stay tuned to find out...

This is what the All-Time Standings would look like if all four seasons of our league were combined into one long season. For example, to find the total runs I added up how many runs each team scored from 2010-2013. The team with the most total runs over those 4 seasons got 12 points, the team with the 2nd most total runs got 11 points and so on. I repeated this exercise for all 10 scoring categories to find the Total Points.
Comparing how this 5x5 method of computing the All Time Standings results in some differences from the Points Method described in a post above:
- Reds1869 climbs from 3rd to 2nd place.
- Captain Hook ranks 3rd here instead of 6th in the other method.
- RedEye ranks 6th here instead of 2nd in the points method. Curious.
- Lots of differences in the top half, but no changes in the bottom half of the standings.
Comparing this up-to-date chart with last year's chart:
- Reds1869 advanced from 7th place all the way to 2nd in one season. Well done!
- Captain Hook gained one slot from 4th to 3rd this year.
- Mbgrayson went from 9th to 4th place, gaining 23 points on the strength of his 2013 league championship season.
- RedEye's team plummeted from 95 points to 69 points, but it wasn't his fault as he is just now taking over the team.
- Tornon had a good year and gained two slots from 8th to 6th place.
- The teams in the bottom three didn't gain in rank but they did draw closer by increasing their point totals a bit.
- Many categories are extremely tight even after 4 whole seasons. Getting an extra handful of homers or steals this year could bump your team up a couple places in the all-time standings. We should continue to see big changes in these standings each year.
You can also see who the all-time leaders in each category are. You can use this chart to identify your team's strengths and weaknesses over the years and maybe figure out a way to improve your strategy.
One bad year can really wreak havoc on your ranking in this league, but on the other hand one really great year can shoot you up this list quickly. It will be interesting to see how things shift as the years go by.
One thing I think is neat about these All-Time Standings is they can give teams who may be out of the running for a championship late in the year an additional motivational factor. Maybe a team can't win a league title this year but they can still gain ground in the All-Time Standings. From now on we not only fight for yearly championships, but we also fight to be the All-Time Champ. These standings may not mean that much now after only four seasons, but a few more years down the road it would be pretty cool to be the All-Time Leader after a decade-long run.
Which method of calculating the all-time standings do you think is best -- the points method or the 5x5 Category method?

Great information. It really confirms my strategy of laying in wait is paying off. You guys aren't going to see it coming.

My team is at 32 with a couple very likely to start the season with the NA status.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
We need two new owners in this league. Bumstead and Vada Pinson Fan have relinquished their teams. If anyone is interested please send me a PM.
We are looking for experienced fantasy baseball players who are willing to commit to the league for several years.
The league is composed entirely of Redszone members. The league is in its 5th year now and we still have most of our original team owners. It is a 5x5 roto (not H2H) 12-team dynasty league on Yahoo with 30 man rosters and 30 keepers. It is a friendly yet competitive league full of active owners. We do not allow trade vetoes. There are daily lineup adjustments. We have a 5 round draft each Spring that is a slow draft with a 10 hour timer per pick. The league is free to play and there is no prize money. We play for pride and Redszone bragging rights!
-
Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
I am interested in a team.
-
Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Question for those in the league, since we have two available teams and one of them is somewhat better than the other one, should we:
A.) assign the teams "as is" to the new owners or
B.) hold a mini-draft for the two new owners to take turns selecting players from the two rosters?
The mini-draft would be a more even distribution of players, instead of giving one new owner a better team than the other guy gets. Plus it would be fun. :p
What do you guys think? A or B?

OK I will put your name in the hopper. Ideally I would like to add an owner who is not already playing in one of the Redszone leagues to give more people a chance to play. I know you are already in the League of Reds Nation and the Redszone Old-Timers League, which is great. You are a great leaguemate and will be strongly considered for this spot.
Right now only two people are in both dynasty leagues, myself and mbgrayson.

Go ahead and consider me for one of the teams. I don't even care which team it would be. Just let me know and what I need to do to sign up if selected...thanks!!!!

I would vote the two teams that are taken over remain intact

I'd be game, if there's a team left.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
I would like to see them blended together. Really just to make it interesting. If someone sees the roster and chooses to take over a terrible team, they knew what they were getting in to. I'm for the mini-draft though just to create more trade opportunities. The shuffle is what makes fantasy baseball.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Alright guys, things are moving forward now. We found two good new team owners (hebroncougar and Edd Roush). As soon as they declare their keepers I will be able to finalize our rosters and launch the season. Then we will be able to set our lineups and make trades while preparing for the draft.
Check back here frequently for updates. Please subscribe to this thread by clicking on "Thread Tools" at the top of this post, then click on "Subscribe to this Thread", then select "Instant Notification by Email" from the dropdown box. It will speed up communication for the league.
Anybody else having trouble with the message board on the Yahoo league homepage? It rarely works for me.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
I will cut Kendrick and Weeks.
As for Halladay, I believe he is my only NA eligible player. Does it all detriment me if I keep him on my roster as an NA? I don't think there is any chance he plays, but does it take away one of my NA spots if I keep him instead of some one else?
I am not fully up on how the NA spots work and who will be out there to draft. If it hurts me to keep Halladay in an NA spot, I will cut him, but if it does no harm, I may as well keep Roy.

You might as well keep Halladay on there until such time as you need that NA slot for another player. I suppose there is still an off chance Halladay could unretire.

OK. I will keep Halladay then. I just wasn't sure if I had 0 NA guys that I would get to draft earlier than guys who had 1 NA guy on their roster.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Hey guys, your rosters are now live on the website. You should probably check to make sure you got all the players you should have gotten.
Now you can set your lineups and propose trades.
All the players in the Free Agent list will be available in the draft, which will begin in the second week of March.
-
Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
The official start date for our 2014 League of Reds Nation draft has not yet been determined, but it will be approximately March 10th. Keep in mind the draft will have eight rounds this year instead of the five rounds of previous seasons. The official draft rules are posted below and the official draft order will be posted soon.
Draft Rules:
- The draft will be a straight draft consisting of 8 rounds. All rounds have the same draft order.
- The draft order will be the reverse of the prior year's standings.
- To make your pick just post your draftee's name on the league message board like this: "Round.pick Player Name" (1.1 Johan Santana or 5.12 Jay Bruce). Then you can add the player to your team by selecting him from the Free Agent list.
- You may not exceed the roster size limit. If you are at the limit when it is your turn to draft you must drop a player before you can draft a player. The dropped player will become draftable immediately -- the next team owner in the draft may select the droppped player without waiting for him to clear waivers.
- You have 10 hours to make your pick. If you have not placed your pick within 10 hours, the next player can go ahead and post his pick. You do not lose your skipped pick. You can still make your pick as soon as you return to the website.
- Multiple picks can be skipped. For example, 10 hours have elapsed since pick 4.3 was posted so pick 4.4 is skipped and pick 4.5 is on the clock. If 10 hours later pick 4.5 has not been posted then he is skipped and pick 4.6 is on the clock.
- If an owner has consecutive draft picks he only gets one 10-hour timer before he can be skipped.
- After you make your pick send an email to the next team owner to let him know it is his turn. This will speed up the draft. To send the email click on "Email League" at the top of any league page. Then click on the next owner and send him a message.
- If you ask someone else to post your pick or your draftee is on waivers the commissioner will add your player to your team page as soon as possible. Before you pick, make sure the player has not already been drafted.
- If your normal roster is full and you wish to draft an NA-eligible player to fill an available NA slot you must drop a player from your normal roster, draft and add the NA player and put him on your NA roster, then state in your draft pick post that you need the Commissioner to add the dropped player back to your regular roster.
- If you post your pick as a "Pass" you do not lose the pick. You may use that pick at any time.
- You can trade draft picks. The only pick you can't trade is the one that is "on the clock". We learned from experience that can cause long delays with owners dragging their feet on their pick in hopes of receiving a trade offer.
- Players added to the Yahoo player pool after the draft begins are not eligible to be drafted and will be placed on waivers after the draft is over.
- When all draft rounds are completed, the commissioner will set a date and time when all undrafted players will be eligible to be added on a first come, first served basis -- it is not a free-for-all as soon as the last draft pick is made.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
We can trade draft picks for the upcoming 2014 draft*, but we can't use the Yahoo trading system for doing so. If you would like to include an exchange of 2014 draft picks in a trade please do so using the Comments area of the trade proposal and notify me when the trade is complete so I can change the 2014 draft order. Any traded draft pick using the checkmark system in the trade proposal application will be considered a trade of 2015 draft picks. The checkmark system in the trade application shows that every team has a pick in every round, but due to traded picks that is certainly not the case for the 2014 draft. So if you forget and include 2014 draft picks in your trade proposals you are likely to end up trading picks that don't exist. Please consult the official 2014 draft order posted here and in the Commissioner's Note for use in all trades.
* The reason for this is because I had to tell our Yahoo league website that we already had our draft. If I didn't set it up this way we would not be able to see our rosters, make trades, or see the draftable players in the Free Agent list until after the draft is over in late March. Since we have a dynasty league it just works better this way. The website is set up to work primarily for standard re-draft leagues with live drafts. It takes some gerrymandering of the Commissioner Tools to make it work properly for a dynasty league.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty
Here is the official draft order. We have no traded draft picks so far this year, so the order will be the same for all 8 rounds.
2014 Draft Order
Code:
Round.pick Team
1.1 RedEye
1.2 HebronCougar
1.3 Joseph
1.4 HayPay
1.5 Crosley68
1.6 Edd Roush
1.7 thatcoolguy_22
1.8 Captain Hook
1.9 Tornon
1.10 Atomic Dumpling
1.11 reds1869
1.12 mbgrayson
The draft will start at 12:00 Noon Eastern Time on Friday, March 7th.
As in previous years there will be a 10-hour timer for each pick. Please familiarize yourself with the draft rules posted earlier in this thread. The draft order and draft rules are also posted on the league website on Yahoo.
The first pick may be posted prior to the official start date of the draft if the owner of the pick chooses to do so. We have done this in the past to get a head start on the draft, but it is optional. The timer won't start until Noon on March 7th even if picks are posted prior to that time.
Good luck with your draft! Don't screw it up! :beerme:

Quick rule question I could not find the answer to when I searched. Can we change our line-ups every day or do the lock for the whole week?
Thanks.

Right now I am doing a slow draft for a dynasty league composed of fantasy baseball experts from all over the Internet including most of the big baseball websites. It is a blast.

Okay, can someone explain how the draft works? I've got the first pick. Where do I announce it?

We announce the picks both here and on the league webpage. You can then add the player you drafted and drop a player in need be to keep your roster size legal. You would announce your pick as follows:
1.1 Lou Gehrig
Drop Wally Pipp

It is pretty easy. You create a new post on the message board on the Yahoo league website. As reds1869 mentioned, the title of your post would be "1.1 Lou Gehrig, drop Wally Pipp".
If you have an open roster slot you won't have to drop anyone to make the pick.
After you post the pick on the message board, you go to the Free Agent list and add your newly drafted player to your team.
Then you come back here to discuss the draft.
The complete draft rules are posted above in post #27 of this thread. It should answer all your questions, but feel free to ask anything here.

Still fielding offers for the #1 overall pick BTW. Tanaka is available and will most likely be my pick if I don't trade.
