We are 4.5 games out of 1st. We are currently in the playoff picture.
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
No matter how it ends. All I can say is that I am enjoying watching this team this season. My hope is they break the 1973 Met's record for being the worst team to ever make it to the championship round (82-79 .509).
They had a Felix Millan too. Led the team with a .290 B/A. Our Felix Millan is starting to come around (LOL).
It's in the stars.

The division is above .500, so it is above average.

The NL Central is collectively 12 games over .500 against the NL East, 9 games under .500 against the NL West, and right at .500 in Interleague play. I'd say it is a thoroughly average division with a ton of parity.
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
I see absolutely no reason for any team in the Central to crater suddenly and fall out of the picture. Unless a team just starts trading off everybody. I’ve never seen a division with this much parity. I don’t care what the run differentials are. These teams are near dead-equals talent-wise.
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
It's difficult for me to rationalize playoff talk when the team is 4 games under. If they can somehow manage to get to the elusive .500...

Would you rather be .500 and 10 back in another division?
We only have to be 1 game better than the other 4. Also, the WC is bunched as well; we are just 3.5 back there. We are in last place, but closer to the division lead than ANY second place team in the other divisions.
It’s amazing to me that we are even in this position on July 4 because we should be well over .500 if we had had the consistent offense we expected to have.
Like others have said, look at what the Mets did in 73. Barely over .500 but they beat our vaunted Reds. Why? Pitching, pitching, pitching.

It's not about what I'd rather...
Outside of the 1981 season where a third of the season was wiped out with a strike (...and the Reds had the best record but didn't make the playoffs), no team has ever made the playoffs with a losing record. Ever.
It's great that the Reds are 4.5 out in the division and 3.5 in the wild card race. That means if they do manage to get to the .500 mark they'll be in a good position, but until they prove they can get over the hump, they're not going anywhere.
I certainly hope it happens. These guys are right on the cusp and this season has been more interesting then most in recent years. But the reality is they still have a losing record and losing records don't make the playoffs.
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
I wonder how the Reds will line up the pitching rotation after the All-Star break?

My guess:
Gray
Roark
DeSclafani
Castillo
Mahle

Texas did in 1994. The phantom division winner of the AL West.

Good catch. However, technically they didn't make the playoffs because there were none and there were still 50-ish games left in the season.

In addition, 1st place has the 3rd best record in the NL, 2nd place is one of the two Wild Card teams, and 5th place is only 3 games behind 1st in the loss column, about to be two if we can get 4 more outs.
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
This season can go in any of several ways. The Reds could run away with it if they start hitting, could fall out of it if the pitching fades, break even and win with a .500 record or even see a dead heat and a 5 way playoff for the division..(Is that even possible?) Imagine all 5 teams tied in the standings after the last game of the regular season.. Are there even rules of how to deal with that scenario?
Either way I'm heading out for a McCrappy burger for the old man..
Re: Keeping Tabs: NL Central
I’m having a very hard time remembering two back to back starts from any Reds’ starters in this century that were better than these last two. Truly impressive stuff.
