Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
We basically have Deno in for Griffey. Otherwise it's our normal LH pitcher line-up.
With improved defense in the line-up, this may be just as good as our normal line-up against lefties.
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
Griffey gets the day off
Lifetime Griff is 22 for 75 (.293) with 8 HR vs. Wells (OPS 1.031).
With Milton pitching OF defense is important.
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
Griffey has 8 HRs vs Wells (which may be the most vs any pitcher) and has hit him better than anybody on the team.
Just sayin'
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
IMO this is the season today. A win and only half game out of the wild card and not too bad for a terrible road trip. A loss and it's 2 1/2 behind. I think it may be too big of a margin for this team to overcome. I don't think it's a good idea having Griffey out with this huge a game unless he's injured.
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
A win would be very key today.
The fact that this brutal west coast trip is coming to an end is a plus as well.

Almost enough to make me wish that the Reds played in the AL.
Freel & Deno chasing down the long flies and Junior at DH perhaps hitting some.

I just don't understand why you'd bat Clayton 2nd and Phillips 7th. It just doesn't make any sense.

Its Jerry, if it makes sense to most of baseball, it doesn't make sense to him.

Clayton has a better OBA vs. LH pitchers than Phillips this season.
Not that much better that it makes that much a difference, as both are excellent. It does allow Phillips to get more RBI chances.
I'd go with Phillips, but it's not as bad as it seams on first blush.

Phillies give up 4 in the 9th to the Braves, down 7-6.

Jerry probably adheres to the old school idea of the #2 guy being a singles hitter who can run a little bit, who can lay down a bunt or push the ball to the right side on a hit and run.
He might see Phillip's swing as more condusive to hitting gappers -- or longer-- to produce more RBI at #7.
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
Wells...9 pitches to get 3 outs.
Re: 9/3 game thread, end of west coast massacre!!
Milton...7 pitches to get 3 outs

I really like Milton...
I think he is going to be really good next year... Sub 4.00 ERA with 15+ wins
