Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
Don't know shutting down Harang would help him. Sometimes a pitcher needs to pitch.
But the Harang and Arroyo contracts are definitely a concern for next year.

Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
Someone explain that bunt to me. Down 4...to move one guy over one base?
Poor strategy.

The Bambino and the King...dead on the same date
How about that! A rather historical date, that August 16th is...

Thankyouverymuch.
And on that day my career in the disaster relief business started.
Makes it easy to remember with Elvis croaking and all.

Bases loaded, one out and the top of the order up against a terrible pitcher...and they don't score. Just as I figured. Unbelievable.

And both were built portly, at least at some point in their lives. The Babe from eating, and surpisingly enough, the King had the same problem.

Hannigan (rookie) ground ball, nearly a DP
Dickerson (rookie) strikes out
Youth will do that to you.

Only real hit in that inning was Kepps. REDS were lucky to load 'em up at all.

Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
I can't stand Dusty Baker.
-
Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
Harang is obviously hurt and Pujols is obviously very talented. The combination means a laugher for the Cardinals tonight. Of course, they have now scored enough runs that we don't have to worry about this one.

His velocity is down. It's likely an injury, not just poor execution.

I'm not a fan of Dusty's by any means, but you're barking up the wrong tree tonight. If Aaron can't get out the likes of Molina and Schumaker, then he shouldn't be pitching. He needs to tell someone that he's hurt or that something doesn't feel right.

Gun's got him between 90-93, his velocity is fine.

Which gun? Brantley on radio says he's topping out at 88 most of the time. If it's the gun on TV, it's been wrong all year.
I hope it's wrong because if he is in at 91-93 and still getting killed, he really does have a serious problem.

According to gameday, his fastball is topping at 88-89. So who knows?

Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
I can't believe that it was Dusty who made the judgment to reinstate Harang. My guess is that it was the doctors and the GM who had the most say. With Harang's contract, I'm sure Walt didn't leave this decision to the manager.
These look like rehab starts, Harang obviously isn't pitching well enought to win at the major league level. Somebody misjudged his readiness.

Do the Reds have your resume? You are a shoo in for a job in the front office!

I think Harang could have been stretched for 5 to get at least get a shot for the win.

I was at Myrtle Beach on the fateful day. Single and having a great time. My two buddies and I had just made dates with 3 young ladies from Concord, NC for the night to go club hopping. The news of Elvis' death caused them to be so bummed that they cancelled, we went to see that new movie "Star Wars" and the rest is history.
BTW, the Reds beat San Diego that night 5-1, with Tom Seaver pitching a 5-hit complete game to go to 13-5. The only run scored against him was unearned on an error by, of all people, Johnny Bench.
I'd have never remembered all of this is wasn't for the demise of the King.

I'm not even going to call CP's PA's at bats anymore.
That's an insult to actual at bats.

Just because.
Of the entire bullpen, Majewski is the one pitcher who I cannot figure out what anyone sees in him. Sinkerball pitcher, for sure, but he gets hit hard and gives up the long ball.
Now, Maj wants to help out in the infield and screws up a ground ball out. Oh boy.
-
Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
Andy Phillips, pinch-hitting for Majewski, leads off the bottom of the fifth with his first homer.
-
Re: Reds vs Cards 8/16/08
Dickerson gets called out on the same pitch that was a ball on Ankiel in the second inning.

Has anybody considered the possibility that its a lack of confidence? Its not like he's had a hot streak or anything this season. He's been pretty hittable ALL season. Before AND after that SD game (so don't point to that). And I refuse to believe it's Dusty either. He's just struggled. After getting snakebit in several game at the start of the season it starts to get into your psyche...I think it's all mental right now. Only thing to do is to work through it. If it was an injury...he wouldn't be back. I don't think either Harang, Dusty or the trainers are that stupid.
