Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty - Year 4

    Hey Guys,

The draft is going to start on Friday, March 8th at Noon Cincinnati time.

As usual, each team owner will have 10 hours to make his pick. Your timer starts the moment the previous pick is posted on the league message board. After 10 hours has elapsed the pick is skipped and the next owner is on the clock. Skipped picks can be made whenever you can get online and post the pick.

The draft order is posted in the yellow Commissioner's Note area of the league home page and is also in the league thread on Redszone.

Tornon has the first pick of the draft. Picks can be made prior to Noon on March 8th but the actual 10-hour timers will not start until that date.

If you would like to receive a text message when it is your turn to draft send me a message with your cell phone number. You are still responsible for your own 10-hour timer even if you don't get a text message, but I will send you a text as soon as I see it is your turn.

Please remember to email the next owner after you have made your pick. This will speed up the draft.

Good luck with your draft, and leave a good player for me!

    --Atomic Dumpling

    Draft rules:
    1. You have 10 hours to make your pick. If you have not placed your pick within 10 hours, the next player can go ahead and post his pick. You do not lose your pick. You can still make your pick as soon as you return to the website.
    2. After you make your pick please email the next player to let him know it is his turn. This will speed up the draft. To send the email click on "Email League" at the top of any league page. Then click on the next player and send him a message.
    3. The draft will be a straight draft consisting of five rounds.
    4. To make your pick just post your draftee's name on the league message board like this: round.pick Player Name (1.1 Johan Santana or 5.12 Jay Bruce) Then you can add the player to your team by selecting him from the Free Agent list.
    5. If you ask someone else to post your pick or your draftee is on waivers the commissioner will add your player to your team page as soon as possible. Before you pick, make sure the player has not already been drafted.
    6. You can trade draft picks. The only pick you can't trade is the one that is "on the clock". We learned from experience that can cause long delays.
    7. The draft will be a straight draft. All rounds have the same draft order.
    8. Multiple picks can be skipped. For example, 10 hours have elapsed since pick 4.3 was posted so pick 4.4 is skipped and pick 4.5 is on the clock. If 10 hours later pick 4.5 has not been posted then he is skipped and pick 4.6 is on the clock.
    9. Draft order will be the reverse of prior year's standings.
    10. You may not exceed the roster size limit. If you are at the limit when it is your turn to draft you must drop a player before you can draft a player. The dropped player will become draftable immediately -- the next team owner in the draft may select the droppped player without waiting for him to clear waivers.
    11. Players added to the Yahoo player pool after the draft begins are not eligible to be drafted and will be placed on waivers after the draft is over.
    12. When all five rounds are completed, the commissioner will set a date and time when all undrafted players will be eligible to be added on a first come, first served basis -- it is not a free-for-all as soon as the last draft pick is made.

    13. If an owner has consecutive draft picks he only gets one 10-hour timer before he can be skipped.

When I posted the rules earlier in this thread I made a cut-and-paste error and lopped off the last rule. I have added it here. The rule has been present on the Yahoo league page, but since it was not posted here please do not skip anyone with consecutive picks until further notice.

I just spoke with HayPay who is on the clock for consecutive picks right now. He was not aware of rule #13 and correctly pointed out that that rule was not in this list. So don't skip HayPay until at least 2:28pm. I think this is a fair ruling since there was some confusion about the rule, which was my fault.

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty - Year 4

    BREAKING NEWS:

Yahoo has added a long-awaited new feature to fantasy baseball that we have been wanting to add since the inception of our league in 2010. We now have the option to include a Minor League Roster!

Most of us have been eagerly awaiting the option to have a minor league roster in our league. Yahoo finally came through! Our dynasty format is perfect for this new feature. The minor league roster will augment our league with a new level of strategy and realism. It will allow us to plan for the future and stash some future stars without hindering our ability to field a complete team of major leaguers during the season. The draft will become more important. Prospects will become more valuable. It will be easier to rebuild a non-contending team into a contender over time and give the teams at the bottom of the standings more hope and more fun during the rebuilding process.

The new feature allows up to 5 players to be added to an "NA Roster". This means that any player with a red NA designation after their name could be placed on your team's NA roster. The vast majority of players with an NA designation are minor leaguers, but there are also players who have not signed with a team yet (like Kyle Lohse or Carlos Lee) and players who have been suspended (Like Carlos Ruiz or Yasmani Grandal).

The NA Roster works just like the Disabled List does. All of us are already familiar with how the DL works in our league. To be placed on the DL a player must have the red DL label next to his name. Players on the DL do not count towards your 30-man roster limit. Once a player is activated from the real MLB disabled list he must be removed from your team's DL or else you won't be able to make any roster changes until you do. When you take a player off your DL you must drop a player from your active roster. The NA roster works the same way. Therefore, once one of your minor leaguers gets called up to the big leagues he would have to be added to your normal 30-man roster or you would have to drop him.

Yahoo allows leagues to decide the number of DL slots. Anywhere from 0-5 are possible. In our league we voted to have 4 DL slots.

Yahoo allows leagues to decide the number of NA slots. Anywhere from 0-5 are possible. We have not decided how many NA slots to use. We need to do that now. Right now. We need to decide this ASAP so we can implement this before Opening Day.

My tentative plan is to add 2 NA slots for this season and ramp up to 5 NA slots next season. If the maximum number of NA slots is increased in future seasons we will grow our NA slots to the maximum that is allowed. For dynasty league keeper purposes, any minor league player on your NA list at the end of a season will be a keeper the following spring, but retired, inactive or suspended players cannot be kept on your NA roster during the offseason. So if you want to keep them they will have to be kept as part of your normal 30-man roster. In other words, when we start up a new season you will be able to keep up to 30 major league players and up to 5 minor league players.

Are you guys OK with that plan? Would you like to suggest a better plan or a modification to my plan?

Please discuss this new feature here. After a short period of discussion I will decide how to proceed with implementing this cool new feature.

    Points to discuss:
    • How many NA slots to use this year.
    • How many NA slots to use in future years.
    • Should we start small and ramp up the size of the NA roster over time? Or go straight to the full 5-man minor league roster now?
    • Should we limit the NA roster to minor leaguers only? Or should we allow unsigned players and suspended players to be put on the NA roster as well?

I am hoping we can have a quick, friendly discussion and resolve the issue without any arguing or hurt feelings. I think we can.

    Share your thoughts!

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty - Year 4

I am not a fan of adding NA slots this season. I have already sacrificed ML talent to be able to obtain prospects. Due to my weak roster I had to look more towards the future instead of now. I had to decide the value of my limited roster spots (prospect vs proven), when most didn't need to because they will be competive this year. During the draft, I selected prospects instead of much better major league players available at the time to gain a competitive advantage for next year, while somewhat sacrificing 2013.

Now my entire strategy is available to everyone and on a whim 2 weeks before opening day? My only move would be to pick up a justin ruggiano or similarly unstartable major leaguer. Sorry for the poor wording, but I think most can get the spirit of what I'm saying.

    0 slots 2013
    5 slots 2014
Limit the NA slots to what Yahoo decides is NA. My buddy is in a league where everyone is a prospect until they reach 200 IP or 500PA. They have a 75 man minor league roster and you are allowed 15 ML keepers every year plus full minor league roster. They keep this running off site on a message board and use yahoo for the actual game. Probably too much for us right now, but in the future we could look towards building a similar league.

Thanks for your input. I will take it into strong consideration when I make the decision.

I see your point regarding your decision to draft prospects instead of major leaguers, a decision that will hurt you this year but set you up nicely for the future.

Is it possible that adding a minor league roster could actually help you more than the rest of us? I think it makes all those prospects you have accumulated more valuable immediately because now they will be in higher demand since teams will have a place to put them. Since you have most of the elite prospects the rest of us will be at a severe disadvantage when it comes to filling out our minor league rosters. Your prospects will be highly sought after and will have very high trade value. I don't know. We'll see.

Anybody else have any thoughts on the issue?

I love the idea of the NA Roster but I do see coolguy's point. We all entered this season with one set of assumptions so perhaps it would be wise to wait until next year to fully implement the feature when everyone knows it is coming. If we do add the rule this year it should only be one or two slots, with a full complement to begin next year. I am very excited about this feature!

Re: League of Reds Nation - The Ultimate Dynasty - Year 4

I just think the addition of 5 more slots to each team, for a total of 35 (not including the 4 DL slots, which would take it to 39) is excessive. If a player on a team goes down, the only available players to help immediately are already fringy and generally poor fantasy options, and having another 60 players added to rosters would dilute this even further.

I would be for removing some bench slots and replacing them with NA slots but would be against expanding rosters to an even more humongous size than they are now.

Aside- I understand the concept of a keeper dynasty league, but in our league right now the best players available to pick up are owned in less than half of leagues (three pitchers outstanding). I think it is interesting but not necessarily fun to have to pick up Clayton Richard when Matt Cain goes down, or to have to add Juan Francisco if Miguel Cabrera goes down.
