What happened to 101/102/103 MPH Chapman?

He just pitched a game 2 or 3 days ago, threw a dozen or so pitches, and all were fastballs in 100/101 range. He didn't have that today, and him getting an attitude because he didn't get the call he wanted on his first pitch didn't help matters any. Just a terrible outing by Chapman, and Broxton wasn't much better in the 8th. This bullpen isn't as good as their reputation.

Today seems like payback for our win against Kimbrel and the Braves.

Chapman sells tickets. People wanna see batters swing for 100 MPH pitches and the batters look dumb. Chapman not pitching well and not 100 MPH loses the flash.

Last year we had an CY ACE in Cueto, ROY in Frazier, GG in Phillips, MVP in Votto, fireball closer in Chapman, Nasty bullpen, awesome starting pitching, Most improved player in Ludwick and a No hitter in bailey and a fall short Epic fail in the end. That stuff sells tickets.

This year we have??? DL Cueto, DL ludwick, Slumping Frazier and Cozart, so-so closer Chapman, so-so bullpen, so-so starting pitching, GG Phillips, MVP Votto, Choo Choo nasty, a German bomber, and a heating up Bruce. A lot of questions yet to be answered.

So-SO starting pitching? They have had good to great starting pitching this year.

Hate to say it, but a 1/4 of the way through the closer spot is not anything special for this team....3.32 ERA, 8 of 10 in save situations, looks like a Coco Cordero stat line, good but not great....

I thought the same thing. It seems like all of these closers go through funks during the season. Kimbrell just went through one and now he's back to dominating. I suspect Chapman will be back to dominating before long.

What was wrong with Broxton? He pitched just fine.

He faced 4 batters, allowing a hit, a walk and an earned run. He didn't get hit hard, but he definitely wasn't effective either.

He's been pretty bad over his last 10 appearances. He has an ERA over that stretch of 6.23 (6 ER in 8.2 IP) and has a K/BB ratio of 11/7. Call it a bad month if you want, but that's not exactly a tiny sample size for a closer who's only going to throw 70-75 innings the entire season.
