    The Mather Effect

I have thrown mentions of the potential Curse of Joe Mather in a few threads here and there but thought we might need a comprehensive thread to address this pressing concern. When Mather was signed the Reds were 16-14. The Reds went 27-14 with Mather in the organization. Since his release on June 18, the Reds are 2-6. Some may say small sample size or good teams/bad teams, some blame slumps, others curse the firing of Dan O'Brien, I say it clearly is the Mather Effect.

I blame buying my father a Reds hat for Father's Day, it's been all downhill since then.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Reds won 3 of 4 in that time frame inc on Father's Day so you are probably in the clear.

Jeez, Beave, I thought this would be about Jerry Mathers.

Had no idea he was in the organization. A robust .175 at Pensacola.

As far as I know Jerry Mathers was never in the Reds organization. Leave it to Beaver ran from 1957 to 1963. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Mathers During this period the Reds finished as follows:
    57- 4th
    58- 4th
    59- 5th
    60- 6th
    61- 1st- lost in series
    62- 3rd despite 98 wins!
    63- 5th

The show "New Leave it to Beaver" ran from 1983 to 1989." The Reds had arguably less success during this period, never once winning 90 games.
    83- 6th
    84- 5th
    85- 2nd
    86- 2nd
    87- 2nd
    88- 2nd
    89- 5th

There appears no correlation between the successful periods in Jerry Mathers career and success for the Reds.

I was sure the June swoon was caused by me receiving tickets on Fathers Day to one of the upcoming Giants games. The Reds haven't done much lately to excite me to make the 3hr. drive. But, I'll "take one for the team" and keep the kids happy.

Pending the outcome of tonight's game the Reds are 8-12 in the post Mather era.

    Re: The Mather Effect

Just thought I would update this thread. After the release of Joe Mather on June 18, the Reds limped home by winning only 47 of their last 91 games. The season can be broken down this way:

    Pre-Mather: 16 W 14 L .533 win %
    Mather: 27 W 14 L .659 win %
    Post-Mather: 47 W 44 L .516 win %
    Total: 90 W 72 L .556 win %

    Post season O for Mather.

Hopefully Walt can figure a way to lift the Curse of Joe Mather during this offseason or else the future is not bright for the 2014 Reds.

When you first started posting this I thought it was a joke. But it turns out that in the end it really did Mather.

63-58 without Mather extrapolates to .521 win% and 84 wins for the season. Without Mather, the Reds finish behind the 86-win Nationals in the NL WC and don't even make the post season.

In the harsh light of this day after the 1-game playoff loss, this outcome looks more appealing.

This can't be a coincidence. I'd sign him to a Major League contract just to play it safe.
