Yeah, .265 BABIP this year. You'd think that will go up at least to around .290-.300, right? In fact his lifetime BABIP over 576 PA is just .248. That's got nowhere to go but up, you would think.

Re: 9/20/13 - Reds vs. Pirates

Most important win of the season. Not even close. It's not just that they won and it's not even just that they came back to win. It's that they bore down with solid, pure baseball skills in late innings, things that they haven't always managed to pull off this year. Patience, speed, defense, strikeouts. They circled all the way back to the basics when the pressure was on the most.

There was a real sense in this thread that Dusty Baker had given up on this game. He hadn't, of course, but more importantly neither had the team.

I have been talking about momentum all season long. I really thought 2012 was the Reds' year. They were so good, so well-built, so reliable, so inevitable. I thought they were going to win the World Series. They didn't -- not, as a lot seem to believe, because of choking or mismanagement, but because they ran up against the wrong team at the wrong time. It happens.

I haven't had that feeling about the Reds this year at all. They exceeded my expectations in April but have been heavy-footed since. They seemed resigned to two teams being better than they are -- resigned to them being as good as they are at the very least. They were beset by injuries. They were so much less exciting than their talent warranted. It just didn't seem like it was their year. I said that a couple of times on this board and got attacked -- maybe deservedly so, since it certainly was still a good enough team to deserve A Year. But, as much as I don't like to put stock in intangibles, the intangibles were screaming obscenity at me.

The one thing I held out for was momentum. The thing that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. The thing that they got too early, too consistently in both 2010 and 2012. Momentum was holed up in St. Louis and Pittsburgh most of the season, but the Reds were too good a team not to get it at some point. What point?

I think it started with the Dodgers. But I think maybe it set up shop tonight.

Or maybe it was the buckeye. Holy lord, I do love finding random crap in Pittsburgh which sparks something in the World of Superstition and makes me a crazy person.

This team looks 15 years younger than it did a month ago, and not just because Billy Hamilton has brought down its median age and sent everybody sprinting toward October. Isn't baseball fun.

There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

    Anyone watch the Bucs feed?

What was the call on the Frazier ground ball that should have been out #3? Were they celebrating prematurely?

Baseball, for me, is SO far superior to football and even basketball (I DO love me some college basketball and a little bit of NBA), but I am admittedly not a big football fan in any capacity. But regardless, IMO, baseball enormously trumps ALL other sports. And it is not even close. I LOVE IT.

Shutting down laptop (but not the cards game).

G'night gentlemen and ladies. Won't be posting tomorrow until post-game...maybe a bit before since staying close to PNC.

It'd be a serious lifetime Reds highlight to see us win the series in person or, better, sweep it, or best, take over 1st by Sunday night.

Tomorrow morning can't come soon enough. Can't wait.

Geez!!! Adams just hit a 2-run HR. Always happens. Cards up 6-4 top 9.

It's okay. I refuse to be disappointed after what we did tonight.

    Out..

I live about an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh. The Pirates commentators are hilarious. Joey's home run was "about as cheap a home run as you can get in this park." They are also saying that MLB has to come down hard on the Reds for picking on "Cutch." It is like a funeral right now.

All the emphasis is on hitting McCutcheon and "lucky hits" and how they were crippled by the warnings. Guess he wanted to plunk some, maybe Phillips?
