    You are correct. A batter hit by a pitched ball is awarded first base, unless:

    A) The pitched ball is a strike.

    Or

    b) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball.

    However, no one calls either exception these days.

    ^ Let's just say it's one of those rules that is in the books, but is never enforced. The rule has always said if the batter makes no attempt to get out of the way, it should be called a strike if the ball is in the zone and a ball if it is not. But I've never seen it called in 40+ years.
