Elizalde blasts a leadoff homer, Wallach singles, Ramirez triples him home 2-1 Tortugas. Travieso pitched a wild first - hit a batter, stolen base, wild pitch and the sacrifice to score a run without allowing a hit. First inning. Robert Ramirez hit the top of the wall missing a homer by inches.

Cooper out 4-3. Broke his bat jammed by Travieso. Garfield doubles into left on first pitch. Belt high fb. 95 mph to Ortega for strike 1. Garfield steals third as Wallach bobbles ball before throw still had him but Sparks drops the throw. 1 down man on third. Ortega fans - another 95mph heater from Nick. 2 down. Nick bringing heat. 2 straight strikes at 95. Sparks makes a grab of a high chopper and throws out Garcia at first. 2-1 Tortugas mid 2nd. Travieso looking like a #1.

Maron(DH) leads off 2nd. Draws a walk. Maron has an eye. Gelalich beats out infield bunt. 1st and 2nd. Daal(2B) fails to bunt twice (fouls) hits shallow fly to CF. 1 down. Elizalde lines hit to RF to load bases. RFer Coulter makes a rocket throw to plate - runner would have out if he tried to score. Kid has a gun. Blandino(SS) hits into 4-6-3 DP. 3 down.

Pensacola - A strike out and two grounders to first, and Stephenson has a 1-2-3 innning.

Stephenson fans another in the second. He also gives up a walk, but the runner was gunned down stealing. He has faced the minimum through two.

He has only thrown 23 pitches in the first two frames, 13 strikes. Seems like he ran up the pitch count often last year.

Travieso facing leadoff hitter to start third. Kid basically pitching to hometown crowd. Minor League pitcher of the year gets Davis to bounce to Sparks who was playing in. Excellent play by Taylor to nail him. McFarland grounds 6-3. 2 down. Sinking changeup got him to ground. Coulter, the Manatees star bounces it to Sparks who makes another good play. Nick used his change a lot that inning and it was effective. 1-2-3 inning. 2-1 Tortugas mid 3.

CF Ervin leads off for the Sea Turtles. Flies to left. 1 down. Wallach pops up to shortstop in shallow left center. 2 down. Ramirez (1B) Ks. 1-2-3 for Hiram Burgos. Quick inning for the Tortugas - they came and went swinging.

Reading Dave's Pensacola updates - looks like a good night so far for 2 important prospects Stephenson and Travieso.

Re: Thursday April 9th 2015 Minor League Opening Day Updates

Taylor Brennan(3B) fouls three 2 strike sliders before fanning on a change in the dirt. Nick used his whole arsenal to get Brennan. Roache falls behind 0-2 on fastballs, take a waste pitch then 95 heater K. 2 down. Cooper flies to Gelalich. 8 straight retired by Travieso. Man he's looking sharp! FB hitting up to 95, slider and change working too.

Sparks singles to RC. 6 hits for Turtles. Burgos worried about Sparks throws over. Maron fans on 89 mph fb. Gelalich makes it 2 for 2 singling Sparks to third. Daal flails at changeup way in front. LOL. Burgos almost had him falling down on that changeup. Gelalich steals 2nd easily. 2nd and 3rd 1 down. Daal gets dumped on fanny with inside fb. 2 and 2. Daal tries to take first on ball three. Where's your head at Carlton? Chopper to third, Sparks scores, RBI for Daal. Gelalich goes to third. 2 down. Sparks made that run with a good jump and no indecision. Elizalde fans on inside fb. Finally Sebastian makes an out. 3-1 Tortugas after 4. 7 hits after 4 innings - good start all around for Daytona.

Re: Thursday April 9th 2015 Minor League Opening Day Updates

Garfield, Ortega and Garcia go down to Nick on just 6 pitches. 1-2-3 mid 5. Nick has 5 Ks but he is rolling along, nothing hit very hard.

Blandino goes full, fouls one, draws leadoff walk. Burgos almost picks off Blandino twice. Burgos on a rehab start is showing his experience with that move. Ervin misses a 69mph yakker. K. Burgos breaking ball and change have been effective - they're trying to sit on his fb though. 1 down. Wallach, who is going to share catching and DH duties with Maron this year, grounds out Blandino to 2nd. 2 down. Ramirez fans. 3-1 end of 5. 5 Ks for Burgos, mostly on that slow yakker.

    Travieso 6 IP 1 H 1HBP 1WP 0BB 5K 1ER so far.
Davis tries to bunt and fouls it off. Bunts it in air and Travieso!!!! Great running catch diving out to grab it on line! 1 down. Man, Travieso flashed leather to go with a masterful performance so far. McFarland grounds to Daal. 13 straight outs for Nick. Coulter drills one but Elizalde makes a running catch. 3 down. 3-1 mid 6.

Kaleb Earles takes over for Burgos. Sparks grounds to pitcher off glove goes to Brennan at third and that kid makes a great play to get Sparks. Impossible play yet he made it. 1 down. Maron flies one opposite field to left. 2 down. Gelalich grounds 4-3. Earles throws almost sidearm. 3-1 after 6. Really well played game. Doesn't seem like a A level game at all.

    7th
Brennan out on 95mph fb. Roache flies to Daal on outfield grass. 2 down. 16 straight batters down. Both Brevard runners came in first. Jackie Robinson Ballpark sounds so much better than Radiology Associates Field. Cooper walks. And here comes Marrero to pull Travieso who walks off to a big ovation. 6.2 IP 1 H 1BB 1HBP 1WP 5Ks 1ER. Wow!
RH Zack Weiss coming in. 6th rounder from UCLA. Facing Cam Garfield. Count at 2-2 as Garfield fouls 4 pitches off. Ball 2 was very close - Brevard announcers thought it was a strike. Got him. 3-1 mid 7.

Daal leads off 7th. Grounds out 4-3. Earls faces Elizalde next. All fastballs from Earls - hits 93-94. Sebastian pops to SS on outfield grass. 2 down. Blandino error off Brennan's glove at 3rd then he steals 2nd on first pitch. Very close at 2nd. Ervin up next. ERVIN Blasts it! Phil Power! CF Homer. 5-1 Tortugas! Got all of that one. Wallach singles. Keep losing my feed so bear with me. Gainey in for Brevard. Wallach takes 2nd on WP. Ramirez flies to LC. 3 down.

Weiss starts the 8th facing Ortega(8th), Garcia(9th) and Davis(1st). Ortega strikes out. Weiss hitting 94 with his fb. Garcia HBP. Marrero wants to argue - says it was a foul. Marrero wins the argument. Unusual. So its a 3-2 count but Weiss walks him anyway. Jimmy Moran loosening in pen. Leadoff hitter Johnny Davis strikes out. FB hits 95 grazing inside low corner. 2 down. Wallach throws out Garcia trying to steal! 3 down.

Sparks leads off 8th inning. Preston Gainey still on mound for Manatees. Taylor fans. 1 down. Gainey is a Navy veteran. Maron Ks. 2 down. JelloCup walks. 2 for 3 and a walk for Jeff tonight. Daal grounds out. 3 down.

Weiss line: 1.1 IP 1BB oH oR 2Ks

Top 9 Tortugas lead by 4. Jimmy Moran on to pitch. McFarland ropes a double down RF line on 1st pitch. Clint Coulter walks on 5 pitches. Brennan now 2-0. Moran not able to find the zone. Finally a strike. 2-2 foul. Grounder to Daal only get 1. Runners move to 2nd and 3rd. Marrero pulls Moran. As impressive as Travieso ands Weiss were, Moran had nothing. Evan Mitchell comes in. Roache Ks. 2 down. Cooper goes to 3-2. He fanned him! Good job Mitchell. Tortugas win 5-1! Sellout crowd in Daytona for first Reds affiliate game there.

The Reds top prospect Robert Stephenson welcomed the Shuckers to Pensacola with five straight fastballs in the 95 mph range. He ended up striking out Wren, Milwaukee's 19th best prospect.

Stephenson, who had his 80-mph change up working, too, fanned Wren again in the 5th and had seven total in 5.2 innings. He gave up four hits, two walks and three earned runs.

Stephenson said he's happy with the way his change up looked.

"I was a little bit amped up and that's when I ran into trouble," Stephenson said.
    Friday game notes:
The second game of the five-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers Double-A affiliate Biloxi Shuckers is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Friday. RHP Daniel Wright makes his Double-A debut as he takes the mound for the Wahoos and is scheduled to be opposed by the Shuckers RHP Tyler Wagner.

The first 2,000 fans in attendance on FANtastic Friday Giveaway will receive a Blue Wahoos hat provided by Landrum Human Resources.

The game is broadcast live on the Blue Wahoos flagship station NewsRadio1620 (WNRP-AM). Listen for free at bluewahoos.com and by using the TuneIn Radio app on your mobile, desktop or home devices. Stream Wahoos games on MiLB.TV, a subscription-based service provided by Minor League Baseball.

Ouch! Bad night for AAA and AA teams. O runs, 5 hits, 24 K's - combined. Here's to hoping this was the exception, rather than the rule.

The Bats bats got handled, but looking over the roster - they should be fine offensively unless guys just severely under perform their past.

Bryson Smith is the leadoff hitter and Yorman is batting in the 3-hole. If that continues, look for low run production to continue. Bats won't be dreadful like they were last year, but they'll be far from good.

When healthy, Bryson Smith has hit pretty well. Rodriguez, we will see. If he hits like he did most of last year, he will be fine in the 3 spot.
