Perhaps they didn't want a full AFL workload but wanted to find a way to get him an extra 20ish innings before calling it a wrap on 2015?

20ish innings is about the workload starters tend to get in the AFL. Most guys, even starters, only throw 3-4 innings per game and get 5-7 starts.

So what's your take? Do you have any speculation, informed or otherwise?

I've got absolutely no information on the situation. Plenty of speculation, but I'm going to leave that to myself.

That would seem to make sense. Gets his work in now and the AFL might be an extra 20 IP on top of that they don't want him to get.

Two pitchers have topped 30 IP in the AFL the last three seasons combined. Neither topped 32 IP. There are tons of controls in place so the teams control the usage of the players.

That's not the point. How many IP will Stephenson throw in the instructs prior to the AFL? If he fills his IP quotient in September, then it doesn't matter what the usage controls are in Arizona. He's done. Plus, getting him done early and giving him a longer offseason might be their preference.

This is a lot more likely than anything else in the thread on the topic.
