I agree with most of this. This wasn't an egregious mistake by Price, but it wasn't the best way to manage the 9th, in my opinion.
Two points:
1. This is Leake's quote after the game about going back out for the 9th.:
Sounds like Leake wasn't positive himself about going out again. At 110+ pitches, and he says he feels "stiffer," I don't send him out again. A good manager is on top of this.As for going out for the ninth, Leake said he felt good.
"I felt good. Slightly stiffer, but, I mean, I still felt good," he said.
Leake said he didn't ask Price to go back out for the ninth.
"Probably if we had one more hitter come up for us, I probably would have pulled myself because it'd be a long sit," Leake said of the top of the ninth when the Reds sent five to the plate. "I felt like I was still good to go and they fought me well those first two at-bats. (Ben) Revere did a good job getting on base and (Jeff) Francoeur wouldn't get out."
2. Chapman has been struggling for awhile. He has not been lights out for around a month. In May, he has a 3.09 ERA, and batters were hitting .292 with a .410 OBP against him. Clearly, use him in tight situations when you have to, but try to avoid it, if you can, until he shows signs of getting back on track.
