2015 Reds MLB Draft Picks and Signings

Please post information relating to the 2015 Reds MLB Draft Picks and Signings here.

And here is the link to JaxRed's spreadsheet for the fans of his summary:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

The Reds' draft pool, per http://www.baseballamerica.com/major...s-values-team/ , is $7,777,900. The Reds can spend up to $8,165,912.22 without penalty, $8,547,802.20 and lose their 1st round pick next year, and $8,943,692.22 and lose their 1st and 2nd next year.

Remember that only the amount of a signing bonus over $100,000 counts towards the pool from rounds 11-40.

    Below, you can see the Reds' draft picks. BA Ranking will follow the prospect's name. If no ranking is posted, the player was outside of BA's top 500. Thank you to podgejeff_ for providing BA rankings for prospects. I have looked for the BA rankings for rounds 11-40. Let me know if I missed any. Thanks;

    GAllen5862

"I'm hoping to kind of get it over with and kind of sign and see what holds in the future," Stephenson said.
Sounds as if Stephenson is looking to sign rather than honor his commitment to Georgia Tech.

Baseball: Jordan Ramsey & Zach Shields picked by Reds in MLB Draft
Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 4:18 by Eric Detweiler

Jordan Ramsey passed up pro ball last year for the chance to return to the NCAA Tournament with UNCW. The hard-throwing closer did his part to lead the Seahawks to an automatic bid and boosted his Major League Baseball Draft prospects along the way.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Ramsey in the seventh round on Tuesday with the 205th overall pick. No UNCW hurler has been drafted that early since Bradley Holt went 33rd overall in 2008.

The Reds followed up by taking fellow Seahawk Zach Shields with their 10th round pick. Several of their teammates are expected to go in Rounds 11 through 40 on Wednesday.

“I just went into this year to try to do everything I could to help the team win, and we had a great year,” said Ramsey, who was picked in the 32nd round in 2014. “I guess when you take care of the team goals, the individual things kind of fill themselves out.”

Ramsey’s move from the weekend rotation to the bullpen for his senior season paid dividends for all involved. In shorter stints, the 6-foot-4, 213-pound right-hander was able to bump his fastball into the mid-90’s and fix his command issues. He posted a 1.69 ERA over 28 appearances, striking out 62 in 48 innings. He led the Seahawks in wins (eight) and saves (seven) en route to All-Colonial Athletic Association honors.

Ramsey, 22, finished his four-year career with a 3.67 ERA in 267 2/3 innings. His 241 strikeouts are seventh on the program’s all-time list.

“It hasn’t come easy,” UNCW coach Mark Scalf said. “Jordan’s worked to put himself where he is. He realizes that he’s got a lot more work in front of him. Hopefully, he gets a chance to play as long as he’d like.”

Shields — the 295th overall pick — faces a decision coming off an All-CAA junior season in right field. The transfer from Spartanburg Methodist led the Seahawks with a .355 batting average from the No. 2 hole. He consistently put pressure opposing defenses with his speed, whether hustling out grounders or stealing 17 bases in 19 attempts.

Shields, 22, didn’t get as much pre-draft buzz as Ramsey, but a strong performance at the Baton Rouge Regional no doubt helped his case. He said he was heavily involved with three teams when the Reds pulled the trigger in the final round of the day.

He’s leaning toward signing but needs more time to discuss his future with his mother.

“Right now, I don’t know how to look at it,” Shields said. “It’s still overwhelming. I just have to come back down to earth and get the decision right.”

Cincinnati scout Perry Smith called the UNCW teammates about two hours apart Tuesday.

Ramsey’s pick carries a slot value of $207,300, though seniors usually accept a smaller signing bonus. He will head to Arizona on Thursday and likely be placed in short-season rookie ball with the Billings (Mont.) Mustangs of the Pioneer League after that. Shields — who could command his own six-figure bonus — could join him.

Ramsey hadn’t heard much from Cincinnati before Tuesday, but its apparent fondness for UNCW didn’t surprise Shields. The Reds paid him the most attention of any major league club this spring and often asked about Ramsey, too.

“I had a feeling they were interested in him,” Shields said. “Seeing that we’d be in the same organization, it’s kind of cool that I’d still get to play behind a great pitcher like that.”

“Having another teammate always makes it better,” Ramsey added. “He’s a great baseball player and he likes to win, too, so he’s a good one for them to get.”

Shields will fly out at the end of the week for training camp at the Reds’ facility in Goodyear, Arizona. After camp, he will be assigned to Billings, Montana, home of the Reds’ rookie league team. He also will sign his contract there and doesn’t have an agent.

The signing bonus slot value where Shields was taken is $162,100 but a team can sign a player for above or below that value. Shields is likely to get something below that number.

    Sounds like a nice guy
Shields watched the draft process from his house in Florence with his mom and sister. His mother had to go to work and wasn’t there at the time of Shields’ selection.

But once he got drafted, Shields informed her of the news that he made good on a promise to her when he was little.

“ She is the one who raised me and I told her I was going to play professional baseball and take care of her,” Shields. “There is a weight off my shoulders and now I can relax.”

    Sounds like Piatnik will sign:
    http://www.bradenton.com/2015/06/09/...nati-reds.html
Piatnik was slated to play his last two seasons of college baseball at LSU, but said Monday from his home in Winter Haven that he plans to sign with the Reds.

“I had an idea of where I was going to get picked, but the draft is pretty unpredictable so you never know what’s going to happen,” said Piatnik, who was drafted for the first time in his career. “But this is about where I thought I was going to get picked, so I’m happy with it.”

Now, with the picking done, all that’s left is for the players to sign. Players with college eligibility remaining have until July 17 to do so. Some have already put pen to paper and many more will do so in the next few days.

I'd really like so see them sign at least a handful of those position guys in the second 20.

I'd be really excited to see Elih Marrero sign. With his Dad in the organization, you think they have a pretty good sense of whether he'd sign with that 29th round pick.

Along with the pedigree, considered one of the better defensive catchers in the draft. We've seen there's some value in a high-floor defense-first catcher with Tucker Barnhart. The glove will likely carry him through the minors. Anything from the bat (be it discipline, contact or power) makes him a valuable piece.

True, but with the Reds having taken Stephenson in the 1st, it might be a tough sell. Both guys are out of high school, so they'd be on the same developmental path. I'd like to see them get Marrero, but I wonder if this may have been a courtesy pick out of deference to Marrero Sr. Or, insurance against a freak injury to Stephenson in the next couple weeks.

Recent Campbell High graduate Ian Kahaloa confirmed via text message on Thursday night he has decided to sign a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

The 6-foot-1 right-hander, who was selected in the fifth round (No. 145 overall) in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, will fly to Arizona on Friday to meet with the team to sign pending a physical.
Sounds like Friday is reporting date for a few of these guys

Re: 2015 Reds MLB Draft Picks and Signings

Sounds like Riley Thompson (round 37) will not sign:
    http://usatodayhss.com/2015/cals-tho...ck-with-u-of-l

Christian Academy product Riley Thompson committed to the University of Louisville baseball program after his freshman season, and he plans to become a Cardinal despite being selected by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday during the Major League Baseball Draft.

Thompson, a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher, was selected by the Reds during the 37th round. Thompson had been projected as a much higher pick last summer, but an arm injury kept him off the mound late this season and led to Tommy John surgery Tuesday.

“Before the injury, he was going to have to go really, really high in the draft to not go to U of L,” Dennis Thompson said. “It would have taken really big, life-changing money.”

This site indicates that Rainey has signed for under slot, but does not specify how much he signed for. May be a good site for tracking the signings too.
