Could also be a fallback choice for the Reds if Stephenson asks for too much money. Or if another high draft choice doesn't sign for some reason, opening up some funds.

The Reds have been quite smart over the years drafting good prospects in later rounds. I'm sure they had a reason, IMO it wasn't just a "why not" thing.

Tyler Stephenson is not "going to ask for too much money". He will sign 100%

Can't have too many catchers. Once--not too long ago--it looked like we had plenty. Now, we're worrying about whether one of them is going to be able to play LF.

(Disclaimer: I know this isn't news)

Assuming the guys in the top 10 rounds will all sign as they have almost every year under Buckley, the top 5 guys after that I'd really like to see the Reds ink are:

    12. Alexis Diaz RHP
    15. Blake Butler 2B
    27. Alejo Lopez SS
    29. Elih Marrero C
    38. Matt Kroon 3B

Knowing how the Reds operate, my guess is they sign Diaz and Butler and the others walk.
    Go BLUE!!!

The fact that I got drafted by my favorite players team is a feeling I can't explain. I hope to be on the same field as @DatDudeBP one day!

Re: 2015 Reds MLB Draft Picks and Signings

The guys I hope they are able to sign in the late rounds are:

    17, 505: J.D. Salmon-Williams 2B Suzuki SS, Brampton, Ontario ON- BA Rank #401 https://twitter.com/jdwilliams_
    20, 595: Rock Rucker LHP Auburn-Montgomery AL https://twitter.com/rock_rucker42
21, 625: Satchel McElroy OF Clear Creek HS, League City, Texas TX
    26, 775: Dwanya Williams-Sutton OF Greenfield School, Wilson, N.C. NC https://twitter.com/Dwanya24
29, 865: Elih Marrero C Coral Gabels (Fla.) HS FL- BA Rank #124 https://twitter.com/elih_marrero9

I really hope they can get Williams-Sutton into the fold. Rucker gives me an Amir Garrett vibe though he sounds like he had great potential as an OF too, its weird that he went undrafted back in 2012.

Marrero / Diaz / Rucker / Krupa are guys I'd love to see signed.

    Had this thought as well.

Ok, now that that's settled. LOL, sure it's not 101%?

I can easily see a scenario where the Reds try to sign Stephenson below slot, and the existence of Merrero in their draft helps give them a bit of negotiating leverage.

I don't think this was a shot in the dark to throw a bone to an employee. I think the Reds had a plan in drafting Merrero.

If they had no shot of signing him, and no baseball reason to draft him, they wouldn't have done so. I doubt it was some kind of courtesy move.

[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Nice. 50% of the slot value, so $400,000 saved for others.

Hasn't someone maintained a Google Spreadsheet in the past where we can see how much is left in the pool and what each guy signed for?

Is that going to happen again this year? Because that was awesome.

Why not? Teams do it all the time. What makes me think there may be more to it is where he was drafted - most of these courtesy picks, or dream picks (like the DBacks picking that kid who was never going to play again bc of an illness a couple years ago) are in the late 30s when you really aren't losing anything. I think it was likely a combination of courtesy and the thinking that why not give the kid something to think about with his dad's organization.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

West Alabama RHP Tanner Rainey, @Reds agree on $432,950. Half of No. 71 pick value. Sr sign, big arm strength, will get shot to SP @MLBDraft
