Would Freddy Galvis be an upgrade for the rest of the season?

If old Freddy is available from Baltimore without giving up any top prospects, would he help this team for the next two and a half months? He is hitting around.250 with less than 10 homers and just over 25 rbi. He is what the back of his baseball card says. Would this be worth considering?

    Yes.

But he's injured and may be injured until September.

Ironically, a lot of criminals do just that.

The Reds pretty clearly soured on Freddy's defense last year at shortstop, I don't think they'd consider him there again.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I’m pretty happy with Farmer’s defense, and he’s had several clutch hits. Unless Reds could get a major upgrade, I wouldn’t pay the price to replace him this season.

Would note that Galvis is seventh among MLB shortstop in Fangraphs Def this year, though -1 in DRS at the position. Last year he didn’t seem so good, infield generally was pretty slow, Garcia helped matters when he came up.

For good reason. The dude could barely bend down to pick-up a ground ball. I have to think he's in better shape this year. I'd take him as a throw-in in a deal, but if I'm dealing with the O's, Tanner Scott is the guy I want.

Keep in mind that Reds had Moose at second and a heavier Suarez at third last year.

Part of Galvis’ problem was Reds needed more speed/range with that infield.

I would have even settled for this - .275 .306 .394 .701 - just because of the superior, steady D behind those pitchers (they appreciate it).

Aren't we undefeated when Freeman starts at short?

Seriously, if it works, it doesn't matter how ugly it is. Don't throw something else in the pot that you tried before and discarded. If you have an opportunity at a SOLUTION for short, you take it. But, it's not the time for taking random chances likely doomed for failure, which is what Galvis would be.

Who are you talking about? Superior, Steady D certainly didn't describe Galvis last year. He was a good defender earlier in his career and maybe he is again this year, I haven't seen the Orioles much. Last year he was awful. Don't know why. My theory is he didn't keep in shape over the pandemic and was a step slow and not very flexible when things started back up but I really don't know. Maybe he was playing with an injury or something, but he was a terrible SS last year.
