But using KISS as some barometer against bands like Phish (another huge touring act after 30 years) is disingenuous, especially when you are just talking about the man on the street analogy.. well I propose that it depends on what street you're on.

I'm sure I could find people who love both KISS and Phish and people who hate both equally.
I'm guessing their shared hate pool is ocean sized. My knock on Phish, aside from them being nothing I want to hear, is if you're not in that bubble, they're practically invisible. I can't name a Phish song (and I can name a Guster song). We've been talking about where the in/out lines are in a given genre, and for jam bands I'd say it lies somewhere between Dave Matthews and Phish.

Agreed, utterly in a bubble, albeit a big bubble if you know jam band types.. I can't name a Guster song, nor a Taylor Swift song myself. I can name maybe four KISS songs, that's where they were in my world in the late 70's. I do however know a lot of Little Feat songs, a band I'm sure nobody knows or cares about.

I love Phish, I think KISS is kinda fun. Do I count?!

Anyways, and I say this knowing I’m going to get a Domstorm headed my way, phish and kiss are similar in the respect they have been selling out arenas for decades. That is why both should be in the RRHOF. Phish could release tickets for a 2022 tour at 4pm today and it would be sold out within 24 hours. I know I plan on going to Red Rocks to see them after COVID. It’s my number 1 post COVID plan. Wife and I are going to visit her Best friend in Denver and are going to see Phish at Red Rocks. Dream come true.

I happen to love Guster (they're not a jam band though). I saw them in concert a few years ago and the lead singer wore a Guster t-shirt, which I got a kick out of. It was the perfect move to appeal to the hipster Asheville crowd too. And they happen to have some of the catchiest songs around.

One band on this year's ballot we've given no mention is Foo Fighters. They've got the whole modern "monsters of rock" cred, but they don't make the cut for me. Rage is on the ballot too and, despite the Foos selling way more records, I don't think there's argument as to which one is the more groundbreaking and seminal band. Like, this is one where the snobs need to step in and rocksplain to the masses. That's not even getting into Beck and Weezer being more deserving contemporaries. I've got nothing against the Foos, but they seem to be an object lesson in the difference between big and great.

    Amsterdam is a great song!

I saw Guster at Miami (OH) many many years ago. Fun show.

It’s hard enough to figure out baseball’s hall of fame where we have a plethora of meaningful stats. For rock and roll, it’s like your favorite flavor of ice cream. Everyone has favorite bands, some of them mainstream and some are oddballs. I think the Troggs should be in because Wild Thing was playing when I first had... relations with a woman.

It makes for interesting discussion for sure.

Saw them a long time ago right after they changed their name from Gus for legal reasons. They are very catchy. It's why I can name some of their songs.

Go up to a 19 year old and ask them to name a Beatles song. See what happens.

I guarantee you more people under the age of 22 know who Rick Astley is than Gene Simmons, Robert Plant, Steve Perry, George Harrison, whatever. Soley because of the meme.

What’s that mean? It means the rock and roll half of fame is, in a word, silly.
Teenagers know who the Beatles are.

But listen- if the people who are in the target market for Squeeze dont know them...

It isnt silly. Ask people over 50 to name a Squeeze song...

I doubt many could do it.

The over 50 demographic would be far more likely to correctly name a Squeeze song than younger demographics, IMHO, mostly due to the inherent nature of Pop/Rock crossover in those days.

But tying this in with your initial post on this subject: I doubt that 100, 000 people under the age of 40 can name a Squeeze tune

We got on this discussion at work last year. The old folks in the room were talking about the Beatles and someone around 25 made a joke “meh, Taylor Swift is better.” This of course created an uproar. The 25 year old then said nobody his age listens to the Beatles. He went around the office and asked everyone around his age or younger to name a Beatles song. I think 1 out of 15 people named one. Seriously. And these aren’t teenagers, these are people in their early to mid 20s. Teenagers have probably heard the name “The Beatles,” but they mostly cannot name a song.

I remember listening to Dan Patrick and his sidekick Fritzie went on on a skreed about how Hall and Oates were better and more famous than Simon and Garfunkle.

Depends on who you're talking to I suppose
