Yep. I was in Myrtle Beach working Hurricane Hugo in '89. They got over a foot of snow over Christmas. There isn't a snow plow or a snow tire within hundreds of miles of Myrtle Beach.
The head of the South Carolina Department of Highways was interviewed on the local news, and he was asked "what is your plan for removing the snow from the highways?"
He thought for a moment, and replied "Well, we're hoping it's going to melt".
That was the plan. And sure enough, it worked. It took about two weeks of driving through icy ruts before the temperatures finally rose, but it worked.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that people aren't out to get me

School was closed in Wichita today. Wind chills of 20 to 25 below. Wusses.
Actually, I had the wife drive me to work today so that the car didn't have to sit outside in that all day. It's bad enough if some kids get frostbite, but me getting stranded at the office? Hell no!!
It's the 40th anniversary of the blizzard of '78.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. -- Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot)
Today was kind of the day I finally feel super over it. January 16th isn't too bad, I've reached my breaking point with winter far sooner. I really can take the snow, but these temps are too much. It shouldn't feel painful to go outside.

I've only got one real memory from that blizzard: my dad was cooking something on the stove and set himself on fire. He ran out into the snow and doused the fire out in a snow drift. No way to get get to the hospital. Our next door neighbors were nurses, so they came over and did what they could.

Yep, and back problems get worse not better.
You should see a doctor immediately.
What would you say.....ya do here?
Was talking to my dad last night, and although '78 was bad, the blizzard in '63 was worse, at least on the NE coast. The '78 blizzard was definitely more widespread though and affected more people. And when I was growing up, there was an old man down the road that used to tell me about a terrible blizzard in the 1880s where he spent days shoveling out drifts just so the horses could start breaking in paths again. People never get tired of talking about the weather.

I think I saw a book on Amazon about an 1880's blizzard that is considered one of the worst in recorded history.
I remember that 78 winter as I was a freshman in high school. We missed three straight weeks, basically the month of January, because of snow and cold weather. We dodged that blizzard though. I was in SE Kentucky and most of the high winds stayed north of us in central and northern Kentucky.
