    Ronda Rousey defeated

KO'ed in the 2nd round by Holly Holm in Australia at UFC 193. Wow.

    This is big.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I was just telling someone earlier today that I couldn't believe Holm was such a ridiculous longshot, like 22-1, I think? No doubt that no one has ever dominated in the fashion that Rousey has, but just the fact that Holm was such a highly-decorated champion boxer, and coming from completely different angles than anything Rousey has seen before, was enough to believe she had much more than a 22-1 chance... by no means should she have been considered a favorite, but despite her lack of jiujitsu experience, well as the old saying goes... every fight starts on its feet. You watch this stuff enough, you know how common it is for one big shot to land. What was surprising was how easy it looked.

Could still be qualified as the biggest upset in MMA history, though in terms of name value, Chris Weidman beating Anderson Silva is going to be hard to top. It was no secret to avid followers of the sport that Weidman had more than a good chance of winning that fight, especially with Anderson edging closer to 40, but he was an absolute nobody in terms of name value to casual observers. Matt Serra beating GSP way back when remains the biggest upset in history, imo. Werdum giving Fedor his first loss has to be considered. But gotta put this one up there.

That was an A1 butt kicking.
From a boxing standpoint Rousey looked totally outclassed, like she'd never even had any training in the finer points of not walking into a straight left. If anything, this looked more like Ali/Liston, one fighter moving fluidly, the other plodding around, their head in the same place the whole time. Holm had little difficulty landing very solid, scoring blows right on her nose. And the couple times Rousey got close in where you'd have thought her martial arts skills would be dangerous it seemed like Holm shook her off pretty easily.

Frankly, I guess I'm kind of glad to see it. Invincibility is boring.

    Douglas-Tyson.

I have mixed feelings. In a way it is fun to watch a person crush their opponents. And it is also fun to watch that person get beat. Records are made to be broken. Pedestals are made to be knocked off of.

Well, you got your wish last night. Rousey brought a knife to a gun fight. Or something like that. I don't really follow MMA, but if I hadn't known who she was I would not have thought much of her after what I saw. Total strategic meltdown. She was hit hard that whole round to the point that she was in trouble and lacked a way to protect herself early. Yet she kept walking into punches. Maybe Douglas/Tyson is the more apt comparison.

Speaking of that, wasn't it Tyson who said everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face? Ronda, meet the canvas.

    Re: Ronda Rousey defeated

I think Rousey was such an overwhelming favorite because people don't have a handle on MMA yet. They don't know what makes a successful fighter. What style is best: wrestler, martial arts, boxing. Another reason Holm was such an underdog was Rousey was so dominant and she has had a lot of hype. She's deserved a lot of it but it got to the point where people built her up to be invincible. People were saying she could beat men.

Rousey's career isn't over but a lot of her appeal came from the fact she was undefeated and dominant in those fights. Now she's just another fighter.

She certainly learned that there is a skill set she lacks. Without learning to duck, she'll never get close to a fighter like Holm. But she's an accomplished athlete, with a good chance to move forward from this setback.

I think people have a good handle on MMA. I think it's the womens side that is just so tough to gauge. The overall talent level in a given weight class is so thin it's tough to know who is the real deal before they prove it because there's so little real competition at the top.

I always got a chuckle out of Joe Rogan saying she's the most dominant athlete in the world. She's not even the most dominant athlete in MMA. That would be Jon Jones, who has dominated 205 on the mens side of things since he took up the sport.

Rousey either had a terrible plan, or she got away from the gameplan early. Whoever told her it was a good idea to try and stand up with her had the wrong idea. Holly Holm showed she's got a better overall game. Far better stand up, which I think everyone expected. But even in the grapple game she showed she was on par at the very least and that was a game changer. No one has been able to do that with Rousey to this point. Once she got ahold of someone in the past, it was over for them. Not last night.

There were several holes exposed in her game last night. She can get flustered and angry and lose her plan. We saw it early and often. She's never been in trouble in an MMA fight before and had no clue how to react to it. When you have your back turned to a fighter, you run in the opposite direction. Instead, she tried to turn (with a little help from Holm) and that ended the fight. Whether that's a lack of experience, or she just got totally rocked before that and wasn't aware, I don't know.... but it's the first time I can recall someone turning toward the fighter in that situation and it ended up exactly like you'd expect it to.

With that said, Holm was outstanding. She executed her plan flawlessly. The angles she was using were incredible. Her kicking was fantastic. She had the answers. A rematch will be interesting, if it happens, but I'd expect a similar outcome, just one that may last a little longer.

I was just telling someone yesterday that I was going to flip a coin and it was going to be heads. Well I did flip that coin and it was heads and now I suspect that guy I was telling will be asking me for coin flipping advice from now on.

I'd rather see Cyborg cut the weight she said she was going to, and then fight Rousey for the chance at Holm, but that's unlikely to happen.

Also, there's a woman who trains at my gym who actually fought professionally against Holm and Cyborg.

Miesha Tate choked out Holly Holm to win the title.
