    General Baseball Question

I play in an adult baseball league here in Seoul. In our game yesterday there was a ground rule double with a runner on 2nd base. The runner failed to touch 3rd base. I yelled out and they threw me the ball at 3rd and I tagged the bag. The umpires conferred and said the runner was safe at home. It was an automatic 2 bags as the ball bounced over the fence, but should the runner have been out?

We won the game 4-3, so I'm not too concerned, but I was pretty heated yesterday. Just trying to see if I was wrong in my assessment of the play.

    Thoughts?

Runner should be out, he missed the bag. The bag isn't assumed if the ball is in a ground rule

    Re: General Baseball Question

Rule 7.05(i) Comment: The fact a runner is awarded a base or bases without liability to be put out does not relieve him of the responsibility to touch the base he is awarded and all intervening bases. For example: batter hits a ground ball which an infielder throws into the stands but the batter-runner missed first base. He may be called out on appeal for missing first base after the ball is put in play even though he was “awarded” second base.

Thanks! I knew I was right. Their reasoning was ridiculous and I was nearly tossed for arguing. Appreciate the quick response too.

Did they do the appeal the right way? I've seen umpires basically ignore it if it's not properly appealed.

    He is out.

Generally as long as you appeal before the next pitch, the umpire will tend to be lenient on the formalities of the appeal.
