Any list like this without Sprinsteen is incomplete.

True, I spaced on him... I slot him around Neil and Elton

Ha. I opened this thread this morning to post that we'd forgotten The Boss.

    Also, huge overlook, Iggy.

We still have a number of titans left who I don't think have been mentioned. Not all stars of "rock" by any means, many in other genres, but:

    Stevie Nicks
    Madonna
    Willie Nelson
    Aretha
    Diana Ross
    Al Green

...though, while I think there's tremendous music being made these days, I'm guessing the days of a musician who is truly great AND ALSO a superstar a la Michael Jackson, Prince, even Bowie, are coming to an end. The way music is disseminated now has changed this, for better or worse.

But some of those aren't dudes.

I wasn't thinking about country. Loretta Lynn and Dolly are iconic.

I thought I had Dolly on my list. I considered Loretta, but didn't think she is well-known enough among the general public.

If we're going outside the rock genre, Tony Bennett is probably #1 remaining.

Sad to see him go but unlike most people I was not a fan of his music. Just not my thing. I like Brian Wilson, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Weezer to name a few. He touched millions and made his mark on music industry for sure.

We seem to be forgetting Weird Al.

    I'm not sure why.

    Loretta makes me smile.

When I was a little guy living in Mt Washington, my mom would hand me that thing you move around logs with and I'd stand up on the fireplace mantle (like it was a stage) and sing "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" as a duet with her.
