I would recommend Gerogetown/ Arrowsic Island Maine. Nice state beach at the end of the island, lots of reasonable vacation rental homes. Close to Freeport, Boothbay Harbor, and Brunswick for shopping, dining.

Reid State Park is the beach: (it also has a calm tidal pool swimming area for kids though when we were there a couple of years ago there was a bit of a heavy seagull poop issue by it)

The area may be best know for the 5 Islands Lobster CO

If that's how I went, I wouldn't be too upset.

My father in law lived in Maine for a few years in his early 20s and still talks about it all the time he loved it so much. That would def be a great trip for me. I've never been to New England.

My folks didn't like Fla much so growing up in the Midwest our family always did either New England, upstate NY or California. If we didn't go to Charlevoix.

Cape Cod up is an awesome experience

Well another area could be the Westerly RI area. I would hit the beach in Charlestown/ Ninigret when you wanted a beach day and the aquarium at Mystic when you wanted something else (I believe tickets are good for two days as well)

I live in North Carolina that has a lot of good beaches as does South Carolina. The outer banks can be hard to get too if you don't take route through the Norfolk VA area a head south because of this the DC folks like Outer Banks. The area around Duck North Carolina is really nice in that OB area.

The beaches near Wilmington,NC are nice. Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach have good family reputation. Wrightsville has a rough surf, which is good thing and a bad thing (great for board or body surfing but the sand is a little rough on the feet because the sea shells basically get pulverised (sp)). I know a lot of people also like Sunset beach that is a little north of the Grand Strand Myrtle Beach area. Allthough Myrtle itself is super commercialized , the area just south Litchfield Beach and Pawley's Island are good family areas.

The Charleston area is an excellent choice too. I usually go down to that area. I do see a lot of Ohio cars down there in the summer. Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island or both nice as are Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms. Kiawah Island and Seabrook are a little pricer than some of these other choices but great places, but when I go down there to Kiawah we usually stay about .5 miles from the beach and ride bikes down to the beach since you do pay a premium for beach front rentals. Personally, I don't play a lot of golf or go out to eat every night; those 2 things are what really drives the prices up if you stay at Kiawah or Seabrook.

The wife and I are trying to plan a trip for mid July (the week of the Republican National Convention to be specific, Cleveland is going to burn and we want to be far away).

We would like to stay in a beach town, but it needs to be somewhat close, like 8-10 hours tops, because of our little guy. We figure we will drive for an hour or two, stop, get out, etc, drive for another hour or two, etc and repeat until we are about halfway to the destination and stay for the night, do the same thing in the morning.

Anyways, what suggestions do you have for a more laid back beach community? We have been to North Myrtle Beach before, which I actually enjoyed, and think it would work out well, but would be nice to stay somewhere else.

Has anyone been to Virginia Beach, Ocean City, or any of the towns in Delaware? I have heard Virginia Beach and Ocean City can get pretty rowdy. Not what we are looking for.

Anyways, I appreciate any advice you may provide, and I thank you in advance.
Regarding Delaware, I have not been there myself, but I hear that Rehoboth Beach and next door beach of Bethany in Delaware are supposed to be a really nice old school beach towns with indy bookstores, plenty of pancake and coffee shops ect.

I have heard that Ocean City MD and Dewey Beach, Delaware do have a lot of 21-30 yoa traffic. So, if you rented in the wrong area could have a bunch people rolling home from the bars around 1:00 am.

For our 25th anniversary this June, my wife and i are hiking for 3 days in the New Hampshire mountains, then Cape Cod for 3 days, one day in Newport, Rhode Island, and then three days in NYC with the Belmont Stakes on our last day.

NH mountains are nice, we are heading to Hells Canyon for a long weekend of hiking

I lived in Charlotte from 2011 - 2014 and the wife and I visited a lot of the beaches you mentioned. Love it down there.

We lived in South Park for a year and then bought a house in Mallard Creek.

My recommendation for an area on the Cape would be the Welfleet/ Eastham area. Great Ocean access at the Marconi National Seashore, good hiking, calm cape side and pond swimming too.

Back in the day. I took the family to Myrtle Beach and Charrlston a lot. Nice beaches.

Not in the east, but Traverse City MI is a great family place too.

From a dad that drove his family all over creation with 3 children starting at 6 months, be brave and drive them everywhere. They get used to it and start to love the car time. I always liked it because I got to spend 24x7 time with my family and got used to being with them all the time.

We are going to Charleston for about 3 days and Pawley Island for about 2 days in July. Any must do things at Pawley in particular?
