Are there any movies that should not be remade?

It seems a lot of movies are getting remade - or rebooted - these days. The Magnificent Seven is being remade. Every few years they make a new Spiderman or Batman movie but what about some of the classics?

    Yes. Most of them.

I'm still confused why Van Sant remade Psycho. Very much doubt anyone will ever attempt Citizen Kane.

Shoot, I'd just like to see more original material. Use your imagination, already!

This. And same goes for music.

There are always a few exceptions, in general, covers are a bad idea.

Has a remake ever been better than the original?

    No doubt about that.

Manfred Mann - Blinded by the Light.

I do agree with your overall point, though.

Magnificent Seven being remade is a travesty. It's a near perfect movie. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to remake it.

Eh, I meant movies. I bounced around there. Sorry.

    Are any movie remakes better?

No matter what, they can't take away the original.

It's just like when they butcher a book when they make the movie version - the book is still there.

This is what I tell myself anyway.

Dirty Dancing didn't even need to be made, much less remade, yet here we are.

    Nope. no, no no, nope.

As for remade movies that were better than the original, yes actually, several.

    Ocean's Eleven
    3:10 to Yuma

One could argue that The Magnificent 7, a remake of 7 Samurai is better.

    Scarface
    True Grit
    The Thing
    Invasion of the Body Snatchers
    His Girl Friday

High Noon is a great movie, But High Noon in space? With shotguns? I loved Outland.

    Little Shop of Horrors.

Sometimes the remake is just better.

    Except Manfred Mann sucks arse.

Not sure Miami Vice counts as a remake, but I think Mann's film version is an intriguing update of his original series.

I'd actually argue that The Force Awakens is, in many ways, a successful remake of A New Hope. Not completely so, but there is an argument there to be sure.

I like that your first example, The Magnificent Seven, is actually a remake itself.

While that's true, I'm basically talking about American and British movies. Movies like Three Men and a Baby, Scent of a Woman and The Birdcage were all remakes of foreign films. What if they remade Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter? Are you up for that or would your nerd heart break into a million pieces?
