I rewatched it and if he's busting he can make the play most likely just before it gets to the bag but then makes a different play if his momentum takes him into the runner causing strange footwork around the base.

It was a strangely timed play...he chose not to bust it and catch it before the base, my problem is that he didn't square his body up in case it hit the base but instead played it off to the side.

I was the main one on him last week on the passed ball....so I'm not a huge defender of his....but I did watch it again before making my claim.

He could have chosen to tag the batter-runner, though.

I would submit that's a rule that needs to be change. If a defensive player makes a mental "error" that allows a batter to reach base who otherwise would have been out ... why can't that go down in the official scoring as an "error"?

If the reasoning is "Because that's the way MLB has always done it" ... that's atrocious reasoning.

My guess is that the reason is because official scorekeeping is subjective by nature, and so they don't want it to be even more subjective. So they set some guidelines, like no errors on bad hops or balls hit into the lights or sun, or there had to be a reasonable chance on the ball for an error to be committed. It is unfortunate, because sometimes we see some brutal defense that is so bad you can't even give it an error. But there is no perfect system.

Would you be in favor of charging an error to Disco for throwing to first base for the easy out and failing to get the lead runner on the bunt when the opportunity appeared to be there?

I know....I would like to see that same play with him busting to try and beat that ball to the bag with his glove. Just see how it played out. I agree it's THE play but I'm not convinced he gets to that ball before it hits bag with the necessary footwork to make the play.

Where we all agree...I hate his effort and then his playing the ball off to the side (could argue lack of effort twice on that play)

IMO, most of the veterans are just going through the motions (in Votto's case, slow motions)
