    Truckers would honk their horns driving on I-75 during games, kinda sad how neighborhoods & businesses around Crosley Field were demolished for the new hiway

    It was hemmed into a small place and even before the highway and Powell Crosley twisted the City's arm to get more parking in 1958, that arm twist involved razzing a mess of homes in the neighborhood and building parking lots for commuters.

    Problem with Crosley Field was that it was a in a carry over location from 19th Century Cincinnati. Flush in the middle of an over developed area with industry and train traffic, and on the other side of town from the growing suburbia of the area.

    It aged out, like Ebbets, Connie Mack, Braves Field, Forbes and the Polo Grounds

    I didn’t know about the Cincinnati ball fields before League Park. The ones prior to League Park (Union Grounds, Avenue Grounds, Bank Street Grounds) weren’t on the same site as League Park, Palace Of The Fans, and Redsland Field/Crosley Field. But they were in the same general area.

    There is a story there

    Following the 1883 season Reds owner Justin Thorner resigned as President of the Reds and sold his interest in the team to Vice President Aaron Stern for an advance of $200, Thorner shortly reappeared as a main player in the newly formed Union Association. Prior to the Unions initial meeting Thorner and the Henry Lucas the main catalyst behind the Unions were meeting at The Gibson House plotting their strategy for the coming season. The most shocking news from these moves was the realization that Thorner had secured the lease to the Reds ballpark Bank Street Grounds. This move forced the Reds to scramble for another location for the coming 1884 season. The Reds settled on a lot 3 blocks south; a site of a former brickyard and current home to a few scattered buildings the corner of Findley and Western Avenue.

    So, they never owned the land, the leased it from the city. BUT they did own the structure so that made moving always a case of finding a good location, in a town that had a lot of industry, especially near downtown that made many areas unattractive. Meanwhile transportation to outer city regions didn't spike until the 50's so moving there was likely a no-go. In 1958 NYC courted the Reds hard and Crosley leveraged that into additional parking with a promise to not move for a decade.

    Saw them at a club in Dayton the previous year. It was either The Hullabaloo or Papaluski’s, my memory has faded. Mark Farner sat next to me at the bar during a break. I bought him a 3.2 beer. My claim to fame. He said thanks, man and left. Woo hoo.

    That time during 1961 World Series that a man got naked and climbed to the top of the Crosley Field elevator shaft while the Yankees were practicing. Eventually, he got the shaft...and was arrested

    @lost_ballparks

    LB follower Dennis Marsh took this fantastic photo while walking to Crosley Field in 1969, the final full year the Reds played at the corner of Findlay and Western. This was the first base side of the ballpark.

    I found this old map from 1869 and managed to identify the ballpark site based on some stories I read. Exact configuration of the park was hard to tell but I think it said which direction it faced and home plate was not in the west. (I hope I am doing this right.) The link is below the photo.
