That's where they were making way for I75 to come through.

In the dirt area I wonder if that was the start of I-75? Or it that too close to the stadium for that?

    Ron answered my question. Thanks!

DeWitt was convinced that the highway would make access better and increase attendance. The area though took a character hit which it could not afford. The team actually paid off some locals along with some city funds to raze their homes and increase parking. The park was already shoe horned in a tight spot, the highway just highlights that

I seem to remember Crosley being a LOT larger than it actually was because, well...I was just a little squirt back then and those wooden bleachers always sounded awesome to me.

I wonder if the nice wift of soap had anything to do with moving the stadium.. I realize that natives to the area were likely used to it, but people from Dayton and other areas probably were not.. It's kind of like people who live right down the street from a sewage plant. They barely notice it after awhile. For everyone else it's WOAH!

That and the fear your tires would be stolen.. at least that's what my wife's family has told me. I grew up in Detroit, we would lock our car doors when we crossed 8 Mile and then we'd always pay some guy $5 to park in his front yard while he sat on the porch drank beer and listed to Ernie call the game.

You'd smell that soap while driving to the park, but you wouldn't smell it once your car was parked. Crosley Field had a smell all its own and it was very pleasant. Hand roasted Peanuts, beer and grass. You couldn't beat it. Riverfront or GAB, the experience doesn't compare to Crosley.

The reason the location of baseball was moved was because old ballparks were built to fit within neighborhoods and there was no way to custom build it to hold the market of fans that wanted to attend a game at almost all times. Not to mention, downtown, by the river is a more central location for the fans from all directions.

Stan's worst year save his last... the prior 16 seasons he had 10,000 PA's with this line - .341/.428/.582/1.010 as you can see from the scoreboard he is hitting .272 in this game, later in the contest he was replaced by Curt Flood.
