    Crossfire: Stevie Ray Vaughan
Georgia On My Mind: Ray Charles

Speaking of Eleanor Rigby, back in '73 or so, a bluegrass group called Red, White, and Bluegrass recorded a version that was on fire. I still listen to it, and even my son says, "Dad, that's better than the Beatles version".

One more oddball. Here's a cover recorded by the same artist where (imho) the cover is better than the original: Layla, by Clapton. The guitar part sounds simple, but is actually quite deep. Clapton really showed his genius with that remake.

I think Slade is a very underrated band. However, Quiet Riot topped them on this song.

    And with this (cover) song:

IMO, no list of sub-par Beatles' covers is complete without this one:

edit: the drummer is Rick Brewer.

Best, worst, and most surreal would probably be: Pat Boone doing Metallica's "Enter Sandman"

Metallica did tons of great covers of 1970s era heavy metal, especially New Wave of British Heavy Metal era stuff.

Lots of Beatles covers mentioned, a couple with country flavor that I like are Johnny Rodriguez doing "Something" and Sweethearts of the Rodeo doing "I Feel Fine"

Dwight Yoakam's "Little Sister" and Waylon Jennings & Jessi Colter "Suspicious Minds" a couple famous Elvis songs that I like those country versions of a lot. Dolly Parton did a great "Crying In The Chapel" too come to think of it.

And, since we are going off the rails now, this is hands-down the best Beatles cover of all time:

The thing that gets me about the acoustic version -- pretty much every classic rock fan knows how that song came about. It's easy to listen to the acoustic version and picture Clapton in a hotel room with nothing but chemical enhancement, a guitar, and his pain, and having that come out.

The thing about that song is that Clapton originally wrote it as a slow love song, but Duane Allman and others changed it and made it into the rock version. Hard to say what was in Clapton's mind almost 50 years ago when he came up with it.

Re: Cover Songs: best and worst

Well I posted earlier about the RATM cover of Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad. Here is the question of what it the cover?

First we have Steinbeck releasing the Grapes of Wrath in 1939. It was made into a movie by John Ford

Woody Guthrie then wrote "Tom Joad" in 1940 after seeing the John Ford movie. https://www.univie.ac.at/Anglistik/e...ta/TOMJOAD.HTM

Springsteen released his song the Ghost of Tom Joad on his album of the same name in 1995. In this incarnation it was a very quiet song, sung at almost a whisper.

When on tour to support the album, Springsteen covered Guthrie's Tom Joad at a show in Ohio a few others

In 1997, Rage Against the Machine covered Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad

Things went quiet for awhile and Springsteen continued to play the acoustic version until 2008 when tom Morello joined him onstage for TGOTJ at a show in Anaheim. things stayed in control for about 6 and a half minutes before Morello went off.

He jumped on stage with Springsteen intermittently after that. My favorite version may be the RRHOF show in 2009. If nothing else just go to the 7:00 mark.

The collaboration was such a success Morello ended up joining Springsteen full time for the Wrecking Ball/ High Hopes tours.

Anyway where the first cover was, who inspired who, it all turned out well.

And then there were William Shatner's covers of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
