Re: 2017 Minor-League Player of the Day

Stuart Fairchild left the Billings game after being HBP for the second time. In all, seven Mustangs batters were hit, compared to zero for Helena. Billings, by the way, was eliminated from postseason contention in spite of winning in 13 innings.

Also, congratulations to Dayton for advancing in the Midwest League playoffs with an extra-innings road victory over West Michigan, the best team in the league by a long shot and the one with whom the Dragons rumbled during the season. For a season sorely lacking in team results throughout the system, it's great to see one league champ (Pensacola) and another affiliate enjoying playoff success. (Pensacola was recognized in a separate thread.)

MILPoD for games of Saturday September 9

Wennington Romero, Dragon: 6 IP 6 H 1 R 0 BB 8. The 19 year old lefty came up big on the road in the playoffs in a duel with highly vaunted Adrian Morejon, another teenage lefty. While Romero's ERA is high, he's shown some interesting traits -- durability and a strong K/BB ratio -- in what has to be considered a strong debut in full season ball.

His next start would be in the Midwest League championship series, which would be Dayton's first-ever shot at a title.

I noticed that the Reds went to the trouble of moving Ricardo Smith to Billings for one start. Should I interpret this as having some confidence in his future as a starter?

No selection for Sunday's game, as Dayton went down 6-0, managing only 5 hits. The Dragons and Fort Wayne will finish their 3-game semifinal Monday night in Dayton.

For the record, Lucas Benenati was very strong in relief of Matt Blandino, working 4.2 hitless, horse-out-of-the-barn innings with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Randy Ventura had a couple hits.

Dayton ends its season with a quiet thud. Four hitters reached base, 3 via a single and one via a walk. Taylor Trammel, one of those to get a hit, was eliminated on an attempted steal.

Andrew Jordan gave up a run in 1st (that's all the Tin Caps would need) and another 2 in the top of the 2nd, being yanked after only an out was recorded.

Jesse Adams retired all 3 batters he faced in the 8th via strikeout, using only 13 pitches to accomplish the feat.

Thanks to those who contributed to this. The overall list is very representative of the Reds' minor league season and prospect performance. I enjoyed reading it.
