OF is all young and controllable with Ervin, Winker, Aquino, Goeddel in the wings with the Dayton OF is stacked. There are so many young arms at the MLB and AA/AAA levels. Having someone who is on a longer time line makes sense unless they are a clear upgrade over one of the guys at the MLB positions and I don't see that yet in this class.

In the end though you take the BPA and move someone if you need to. Otherwise for me it is Greene, Adell or one of the arms and work a trade.
Here's the thing. Guys on a longer timeline don't turn out to be stars for the most part. The big time players tend to rampage their way through the minor leagues in short order. If your scouts think Greene will be ready to mow through MLB hitters in +/- 3 years, then you should probably take him. If they think he's 5 years away, then plan on Homer v2.

This year will be different for the Reds. The minors have back up prospects at every position. They don't have a strong need for a near ML ready player. If, as expected, Hunter is gone, I lean Lewis at 2 and college pitchers, a depth in this draft, at 32 and 38. Lewis has good offensive upside, power, plus speed, and additionally positional versatility. If he hits, he can play wherever he is needed. Development of pitchers seems to me to be more of a numbers game complicated by a challenging learning curve and greater injury risk. I can't see taking one at 2 overall if a position player you view as having potential all star upside is on the board.

McKay currently has a better K/9 and K:BB than Bukaskas. I think a lesson to learn from Senzel last year is to not get too caught up on the whole perceived ceiling/floor labels that are largely a product of what these guys did leading up to this spring. McKay is flat out dominating on the mound and may also be the best college bat coming out. We may be overthinking this a bit.

There's a reason he was perceived as having a lower ceiling. Dominating at Louisville doesn't necessarily change that.

    Yes, please.

Haseley's intriguing but I don't think he's gonna rise to the Top 10, let lone #2.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I feel like the same things were being said about Benintendi around this time two years ago.

And not necessarily at this time last year, but at least entering the 2016 college baseball season, no one projected Nick Senzel as a top-10 pick, let alone the #2 overall pick of the draft.

It's one of the cool things about college baseball as it pertains to the MLB Draft. You get to see these guys really grow up and mature as players during their 3 years in college.

Nick Senzel was the #2 player on the initial Baseball America draft rankings that came out March 10th last year. So, a lot of people saw it.

Does anyone know if the scouting profile matches the numbers with Haseley? Based upon numbers alone, he may be above even Hunter Greene. Wow, his numbers are phenomenal.

If they did, we'd all know who he was before we opened this thread.

He's projected to stay in center field and considering he's a pitcher as well, his arm is strong enough. Benintendi came out of nowhere too.

Christopher Crawford with a new mock

    2. CINCINNATI REDS
    BRENDAN MCKAY, 1B/LHP
    LOUISVILLE

The Reds would love to see Greene fall to them with the second pick. So would every other team. Assuming he's off the board, Cincinnati likely goes with McKay, and the Reds appear to like him best with the bat.

Benintendi came out of nowhere because some teams didn't realize he was draft eligible until mid-March. Yeah, they should have known better, but many didn't. That's not the case here. Of course, we can look back in early May and see Benintendi ranked as the #42 overall draft prospect by Baseball America, too. Less than a month later he was at #9.

What are we even looking at with McKay's bat? Doesn't seem like that's been covered much.

That line about Greene being leaps and bounds better than everyone else is unfortunately ringing pretty true with less than two months to go.
