SLU ace Mac Sceroler taken by the Reds in the fifth round of the MLB draft, will forgo senior season

He fell just short of Southland Conference pitcher of the year honors, but you can argue Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Mac Sceroler was the most valuable player in the conference this season — or at least the one with the most big-league potential.

The Lions ace was the highest pick to come out of the Southland this season: The Cincinnati Reds selected him in the fifth round with the 137th overall pick Tuesday.
Sceroler said he plans to sign with the Reds, which means he will forgo his senior season with Southeastern.

"It feels awesome," he said. "I turned down the 36th round last year and came back to school. My goal all year was top five rounds. Accomplishing that goal and pursuing my dream, it's been a pretty remarkable day."

Naughton said he plans to turn pro and skip his senior season at Virginia Tech.

Not much of a surprise considering he's a senior, but Tyler Buffett sounds Cincinnati-bound:

Buffett agreed, saying he’s excited to be part of the Reds’ organization.

“I was excited,” Buffett said. “I haven’t ever been to a Reds’ game, but I’m excited to be part of an historic franchise like that.”

Nathaniel Scantlin is all in based on his twitter @Nate_Scantlin27. Status says "Baseball Player in the Cincy Reds Organization" and he posted this a few hours back.

Sounds like a done deal with a substantial bonus involved.

Scantlin, an 18-year-old center fielder prospect, was signed with Iowa Western to play college baseball, but told the Eagle on Wednesday afternoon he intends to sign with the Reds’ organization and begin his professional career immediately. He will fly to Phoenix on Friday.

Scantlin said the decision to sign with the Reds was made easy by the team when they offered him a six-figure contract with school paid for.

“I figured if I got drafted, then I was probably going to sign,” Scantlin said. “I ended up getting the money I wanted and getting my school paid for too, so it wasn’t a hard decision to make.”
