Re: Buying Altcoins/Bitcoins and investing in the stock market

The value of anything at any given time is what a willing buyer will pay for it. Obviously, the market is always wrong (if it wasn't wrong, the prices wouldn't change every day), but it's the best mechanism we've got. Sometimes it obviously gets wonky, but I don't think that's a reason to shut it down. Whether or not we shut it down for two weeks or two months, the value of companies is going to be what it is in two weeks or two months. You don't have to watch the carnage live on TV if you don't like, and you don't have to buy or sell in this period. If you want the market to close for two months, just don't buy or sell or pay any attention at all to it for those two months. Exact same effect.

I think there are times to close the market if it has the potential to do societal harm. No idea if this is one of those times. Lot of people have forgotten that the stock market isn't the master, it's a tool.

If the market is UP today, and only down 6% for the year (S&P 500), I don't understand the market at all.

Pretty clear the decision to leave it open was the right one, though.

The stimulus(es) went to the stock market (savings/investment) rather than consumption.

I don't think it's that. It's the Fed. They are pumping in way more money than anything that came from some stimulus checks buying stocks.

And yet, basically no inflation (so far).

You aren't going to get inflation just because of deficits or stimulus. Rates are as low as they can possibly get. There is basically record high unemployment and spending is currently as tight as it can get.

If the value of the dollar picks up or if interest rates increase or if spending increases, or more likely a combination of all of those, you MIGHT get inflation. But that situation is very far off right now.

Increasing the supply of money should, by definition, lead to inflation.

Right, but in practice it doesn't. It's a risk factor, but it has never actually caused inflation. There are some examples in non dollar economies and there were a lot of cases when you had pegged and metal backed currencies.

Every example in the US of increasing inflation has been some combination of the value of the dollar, spending and rates.

At least it hasn't. Goldbugs are certainly betting on it right now.

More money in the system and no inflation is fantastic as long as it lasts, obviously.

I’m not sure gold is a great inflation indicator. TIPS are projecting growth rates below 2% out to 10 years. Things change of course, but that’s almost a deflationary sign.

Should have bought airline stocks yesterday. Wow. I booked a flight (for September) earlier this week, so it should have occurred to me.

Probably still have time. Most of them are still down 40-50% YTD.

Should have bought Amazon instead of trying to save money for a house. I always make the wrong decisions.
