I don't think that's a factor, at least not at the P5 level. NFL teams have access to film on everybody and evaluation is a year-round business. If Josh Allen can be taken in the top ten after an uneven career at Wyoming, Trevor Lawrence didn't need to go to Clemson for NFL scouts to find him.

Also, I don't see any way they reduce scholarships further unless they shorten the season. Most teams are paper-thin at several spots by the end of the year. Remember that in those 85 scholarships include the freshmen who aren't ready to play yet and need to redshirt. And unlike NFL teams, they can't go out and sign replacement-level depth mid-season if their four best cornerbacks all end up hurt at the same time.

Don't get me wrong, it's a little static at the top right now, but (1) things change and (2) the powerhouses have almost always come from a fairly limited group of schools. Once a program gets rolling it usually stays rolling for awhile. Then something happens to knock it off track and someone else fills the void. Same ol', same ol'.

SeaRay brought it up before about the importance of recruiting, and that has given the SEC the edge over other conferences. And it's true. Meyer when he came to OSU stressed it to the other B1G head coaches. And while the other conferences/programs are improving recruiting, IMO, the important thing to remember is that a majority of those schools simply don't have access to the financial resources these elite power schools do. It's just not in their budget to commit to recruiting at the level these other schools do. A huge gap there. That's #1. #2 is they don't have the "prestige" that that been assigned/marketed to these "elite" programs, where the major sports media are shining their spotlight (promoting). Yet these are the ones being pushed at you.

It's all about the money boys.

Taking away scholarships is an idea, but doesn't then do more to punish the recruits by then limiting their choices, possible forcing them to accept/attend elsewhere?

One way the "lesser" conferences have improved has been by playing those big boys during the season. They get exposure and lots of money thrown at them in exchange for getting their butts beat on national TV (LOL). I think the MAC has become a better, more competitive, conference.

So I guess finding a way to throw more money at these programs ... redistributing that "pie" a little bit ... where they can invest in recruiting, is the only option currently I see. But people don't like sharing their pie.
Tennessee is one of the richest athletic depts in the country yet they can't compete with Clemson and Alabama for recruits. Did you see the QB playing for Texas? He sure ain't what we saw on Monday night. In fact the backups were more highly recruited than him and the Longhorns have their own network. It's about a lot more than $$

Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts took an important step toward leaving the program as he entered his name and information into the NCAA transfer portal, a source told ESPN.

Hurts, a junior, has one year of eligibility remaining. Since he graduated in December, he could transfer and be able to play immediately.

The Vols finally got their O coordinator. They went down to Athens and stole Georgia's:

Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt pillaged an SEC East rival to get his man. Chaney spent the past three seasons as Georgia's offensive coordinator under Kirby Smart.

Chaney is a familiar face in Knoxville. He was Tennessee's offensive coordinator during the Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley eras.

“I’m thrilled to announce Jim Chaney as our offensive coordinator,” Pruitt said in a news release. “Jim couldn’t be a better fit for our program at the University of Tennessee. His track record of success guiding offenses speaks for itself from his time at Purdue with Drew Brees to his time in the NFL and his success in the SEC at Georgia, Arkansas, and, of course, previously with the Vols."

Chaney's Georgia offenses operated a pro-style system, which Pruitt favors.

After ranking 87th nationally in total offense in Chaney's first season in 2016, Georgia improved to 32nd in 2017 and 18th this season.

Now let's hope that he can recruit at UT like he did for Georgia...

Other then Allen, one can also sight Wentz and Big Ben. All came out of small conferences. But all three, coming out of high school, were not highly sought after recruits by the premier college programs either. None were knocking on their doors. Big Ben got offered one scholarship (Miami,OH). Allen was sending out letters all over the place trying to get a scholarship. Only E.Michigan and Wyoming made offers. Wentz was different. He was a star QB in high school, and a darn good one. Yet he still didn't draw any attention from the premier programs coming out of high school. He was even pushed down on the depth chart when he got to N. Dakota State.

The only reason they ended up at those schools was because no one wanted them (LOL). Now if one wants to say that was a huge miscalculation on those other school's recruiting, allowing these to fall under the radar, you won't get any argument from me. But if one looks at the volume of recruits and scouting reports coaching staffs have to review and primarily rely on, it's not hard to see players like this "fall through the cracks".

They fell into the laps of those respective schools who ended up reaping the benefits obviously. Once in the college ranks though it's a different story when it comes to being recognized by the pro scouts. You may not be center stage in those smaller conferences, but you are on the stage. And when you excel like these guys did at those small schools, and dominate their respective conferences, you're going to draw the attention of NFL scouts.

While I'm guilty of bringing up the above scenario in my previous post, concerning drafting and getting to the NFL, my emphasis was more on addressing the question brought up about what measures, if any, could be taken so we're not seeing the same teams in the CFP all the time.

And the premier Power 5 conferences will always hold the upper hand in recruiting, which leads to drawing the best talent in the nation to their schools, which leads to championship (consistently). And that's where the sports media's main emphasis is always going to be. And the "remainder" can have the scraps that fall off their table (for the most part).

I guess what is being suggested is some sort of "talent-redistribution" or some form of "socialism" injected into the college football system to try and even things up, make it fairer for the little guys? LOL

It's definitely an "imbalanced" system, but I don't know if I want to go to those extremes. You have your big schools/conferences, and you small schools/conferences. And they fill those slots and exist for those very reasons IMO. I'm really not that concerned about "tinkering" with the system that much just so a MAC school can get a better shot at acquiring talent and winning.

Been around long enough to know, as far as college football goes, that dynasties come and dynasties go. And the fans like their dynasties. I don't think they want greater parity. Teams like 'Bama and Clemson are simply having their time. It will pass.

But it still comes down to money and trying to find a way to divvy up that "pie" more, make it fairer. And those getting the bigger slice aren't going to surrender it without a fight.

Of course it's more then dollars. You have to have a sound recruiting program in place, which includes educated, talented people running it. Some don't. Even with some of the bigger programs. Nothing you can do about that. You cant fix stupid (LOL). So I'm not discounting that.

My point is ...the goal is the top. Everything flows to the top, not downhill. That's your ultimate goal isn't it? Whether you're a coach or a scout, you have to start somewhere. And it's likely in some small program. But once you start to make a name for yourself - and it doesn't take long - where are you going to end up at? You're not going to stay at Frostbite Falls University. You want the fame, recognition, and being in the spotlight .... and especially the money. Those small schools/conferences can't compete in that arena, and never will be able to. They're starting points, ground level.

What "persuaded" Chaney to return to the Vols? Look at that contract! Money talks (LOL).

I doubt he would have been hurting for money at Ga. In addition to money, he obviously wanted to work with Pruitt and he wanted to return to Knoxville

You're right. He's not going to be hurting for money. And I agree that money probably wasn't his main concern. It was more of a lateral move between bigger institutions who got the money. So yeah, it wasn't a concern because he knew he was going to still be paid very, very well (LOL).

But my point is ... just like it is in the real world, and it's no different.... most are looking to better themselves, advance, make more money (security). And when it comes to those non-Power 5 programs, they're seen as nothing more then stepping stones to that next level. They're not able to draw that exceptional talent on a consistent basis to rise to that level of competitiveness ... and if their coaches are good, they're gone!

The best, whether a coach or a recruit (player), when it's all said and done, are going to go where they can best showcase their skills, get recognition, and make the most money. Money is an overwhelming factor IMO.

And I say that only in reference to this discussion on how to possibly restore some sort of balance, raise competitiveness so we don't see the same teams in the CFP Championship every year.

Not saying money will eradicate/fix the problem. But it's a big part of it IMO, when looking at the haves and have-nots. That's not going to change.
