NFL season must be getting closer since on a hourly basis we hear of players, beating their women or plotting to kill them....

    From Rotoworld:

Rams signed WR Brandin Cooks to a five-year contract extension through 2023. The Rams moved aggressively for Cooks after letting Sammy Watkins walk in free agency, and did not want to lose a field-stretching lid lifter for the second-straight free agency in 2019. It's a bold move considering Watkins' disappointing production with conservative Jared Goff, but the Rams spent the entire offseason talking Cooks up. Still somehow only 25 in September, Cooks is coming off three-straight 1,000-yard seasons.

Former Dolphins and Raiders head coach Tony Sparano passed away at his home. He was the offensive line coach with the Vikings.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

Rams signed RB Todd Gurley to a four-year, $60 million extension through 2023.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal includes $45 million guaranteed, easily a new record for a running back. It completely resets what had been a stagnant market, and gives free-agent-to-be Le'Veon Bell and contract-year back David Johnson something to aim for. Big bucks are always risky for runners, but Gurley is still only 24 (in August). He is getting paid for the prime years of his career. A do-it-all back on a team with a more-limited quarterback, Gurley is the engine of coach Sean McVay's offense.

Sad news indeed. 56 is just too damn soon to say goodbye to this world.

Sparano's legacy, in my eyes: Having the stones to incorporate the Wildcat in '08. It may not sound like much, but doing so opened up the floodgates to more innovative *and risk-taking) offensive mentality, at a time when NFL offenses were mostly, quite frankly, sleep inducing, play close-to-the-vest types. IMHO, I still believe that NFL offenses are not as innovative as their NCAA counterparts -- The spread doesn't translate as well to the NFL, as NCAA QBs are more running threats - but the gap is closing and we have Sparano to thank for that as he got the proverbial ball rolling.

    Re: 2018 NFL Season Thread

I think Cook will be the #2 RB in Total Yards (rushing plus receiving) behind Bell, while scoring more TD's than Bell. He's my #2 overall pick.

I see: 1425 yds Rushing, 55 catches, 600 yds Receiving, 14 TD's. I saw him as a 1st Rounder last year, and he was well on his way to being a Top-5 back. Healthy, with a better line, a better Quarterback that takes one defender out of the box, and a Quarterback that gives him more scoring opportunities, and a Defense that gives him short fields to work with, and an O.C. in DeFelippo who throws to a RB often.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

The St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson reports Dalvin Cook (knee) will be a full-go for the start of training camp.

It is not a surprise after Cook was able to participate in team drills during OTAs. The Vikings could ease their young runner into action, but there is no concern about his availability for Week 1. Cook is a solid pick in the second round.

That inspiration became the run/pass options that are being used more each year, which should increase in usage this year.

    Re: 2018 NFL Season Thread

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Redskins second-round RB Derrius Guice suffered a torn ACL in Thursday's preseason game against the Patriots.

Just brutal. It was reported earlier that Guice had escaped with just a sprained MCL but an MRI revealed the bad news on Friday. Assuming the usual recovery time, the 21-year-old will miss all of 2018. It's a huge blow to a Redskins running game that was hoping for a lift this year. In his absence, Samaje Perine should be the favorite for early-down carries with Chris Thompson occupying his usual role on passing downs. Rob Kelley will also be in the mix for short-yardage/goal-line work.

    Re: 2018 NFL Season Thread

This should probably be in the Bengals' thread, but since he also has Ohio ties, others may be interested. Kumerow spent a couple of seasons on the Bengals' practice squad.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

Packers WR Jake Kumerow caught 3-of-7 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' preseason opener.

Singled out for praise by Aaron Rodgers during the week, Kumerow got a step and caught a 52-yard bomb in stride down the left sideline with 2:37 remaining for his score. Rodgers was spotted going wild on the bench. The fourth-year UDFA still has a long ways to go to secure a roster spot, but he's making an early case in a receiver corps that has snaps and targets for the taking.

Aaron Rodgers repeatedly praised WR Jake Kumerow following Tuesday's practice.

"I said, 'When you're out there, I'm coming your way,'" Rodgers said of Kumerow. "I have confidence in him. He's in the right spot all the time, he makes contested catches, finishes the right way. He practices like a pro. It's a reminder to those other guys, this is what it looks like." Kumerow went undrafted in 2015 and earned some training camp hype with the Bengals in 2016 but has never appeared in a regular-season game. He spent last season on the practice squad in New England and Green Bay. Kumerow stands 6'4/209 and is still just 26.

I'm certain his professionalism comes from him being the son of a former NFL player.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

Deshaun Watson completed his only attempt in the Texans' preseason opener.

Watson was only in for one series, and his only attempt was a four-yard gain by Bruce Ellington. His health is the only concern right now, however, and getting even one series in the preseason opener is a great sign.

    Who the Browns passed on.....

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

Giants RB Saquon Barkley rushed 4 times for 43 yards in Thursday’s preseason game versus the Browns.

Selected with the second pick of this year’s draft, Barkley wasted no time showing off his athleticism. His first NFL touch was a 39-yard jaunt in which he reversed field, gave the impression he was going to break all the way to the right side and then made a jump cut upfield, buckling fellow first-round rookie Denzel Ward in the hole as he outraced defenders down the sideline before being forced out of bounds. He carried three more times for just four yards, but Barkley flashed his immense upside on his two drives. Barkley will look to be the Giants first 1,000-yard rusher since Ahmad Bradshaw in 2012.

    Re: 2018 NFL Season Thread

What looked like the Vikings had finally got their Offensive Line back to being an asset, the injury bug continues to plague Mike Zimmer as Coach of the Vikings. He doesn't believe in holding back at practices like Hue Jackson does, so he faces more injuries. His teams also handle next-man up better, while also being tougher throughout the organization.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Vikings LG Nick Easton underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck on Thursday.

Easton had been searching out second opinions on his neck injury, but it appears as if surgery was the only option. Schefter reports Easton's season is likely over, but this is not believed to be a career-threatening injury. With C Pat Elflein still on the PUP and RG Mike Remmers sidelined by an ankle injury, Minnesota is extremely thin along the offensive line. Tom Compton should get the first crack at replacing Easton.

    From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:

Teddy Bridgewater completed 7-of-8 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason opener.

Bridgewater was the second quarterback in behind Josh McCown. He had a near-perfect debut, throwing just one incompletion in two series before giving way to Sam Darnold. Bridgewater doesn't have much of a chance to start for the Jets, but his trade value is trending up. The Jets should showcase Bridgewater more in their second preseason game.

I think the national media has greatly under estimated the Seahawk offensive line. I don't think that'll be a weakness for the team this yr. Now the defense is another story. The legion of boom is history. It's rebuilding time
