The wind is making an already tough course almost impossible today.

Mickelson is a good example. Hit almost all fairways today and still finishes 7 over. Spieth triple bogeyed his first hole is 8 over and McIlroy is 10 over. Tiger just started already tripled his first hole and bogeyed the next as is 4 over through 2

When the professional golfers complain, I love it. I love to see them struggle, play in difficult conditions, look human.

Based on the way the leaderboard is looking, you've got to like Dustin Johnson a lot right about now.

The U.S. Open has always been that...wide open.

It's also often a first peek at a new, quality palyer that hasn't had a lot of front page exposure.

Tiger is striping it off the tee, even in his prime he didn't drive it like this. His ball striking game is actually pretty good too. Hard to complain.

But he's missing literally *everything* inside 6 feet. And he's not just missing, he's missing the entire hole. Not misreads or lip outs, just entirely off line. The best putter (maybe) in the history of the world doesn't just lose it for the Memorial and US Open. Me thinks there's a mechanical flaw somewhere in his stroke that'll get sorted out.

But other than like 2/3 misses, his game was great again. Couldn't imaging how frustrating it'd be to play that well and miss everything.

He was Vegas fav and mine as well, but nobody is beating Dustin Johnson this week. Can't see it happening. He's built to win US Opens.

I don't think Tiger was ever the greatest putter in the game. He was great when it came to crunch time. He was great at hitting shots that no one else on the planet could hit. He has the greatest bulldog mentality combined with the most pure talent on tour.

I think what is interesting now is even though Tiger is hitting it as good as he ever has, he is no longer elite in terms of distance and club head speed. There were times when Tiger would hit a 3 Wood or his famed stinger farther than most hit their drives. Now Tiger's distance is no longer elite. Tiger's strength is no longer elite. His shot making still is up there, his ability is still up there, but he is no longer feared the way he once was.

I'd guess lower than that. Maybe about 7 over. They generally set the cut line at the top 70 and that would be 7 over as of right now. Tiger's having another rough day. He's at +3 so far.

I keep trying to watch, but I just find myself totally disinterested. I know some people love watching this kind of golf, and in theory I like the idea of par being a great score and the best in the world struggling this much on a course. But for me, it's just terrible TV. It's almost unwatchable for me. The US Open is consistently the major I watch the least.

There are a ton of guys who still have to play (half the field). 70 guys aren't going to be 7 or better. MAYBE 8, but I'd say there's a better chance of it being 10 than 7. (33 guys have yet to tee off that are at +4 to +7. Quite a few of those guys will end up 8, 9 or worse by the end of the day).

You make a good point. I haven't watched any today as I'm still at work but the scores aren't looking too good. I might be over estimating them.

No need to watch the weekend (or even finish the tournament). Just engrave DJ's name on the trophy and get on with life.

    Re: 2018 Golf Thread

I just read that the cut is only top 60 and ties. Thought it was top 70. So maybe +7 or (more likely) +8 actually will be the #. (The USGA's website is predicting +9))
