    Re: Expansion

Teams are already having enough issues finding 5 guys to start. Adding 2 more teams just waters down the product on the field even more.

No, they have the guys, they just want to keep them in the minor leagues to save money.

There are guys being kept in the minors to alter service time, but how many players AAAA players make the MLB roster early in the season in order to accomplish this?

I am with JayBruceFan, I don't think there are enough quality major league players to support two more teams. Everything would be stretched too thin, offense would be up because the pitching would be woeful.

They've said that every time there's been expansion and it's never been an issue.

Seeing what the area is like out here, I think the Athletics would be well served by moving up the road to Sacramento. They're the capital, have a large population, already have an NBA team that draws well, and I believe the SF AAA team draws well too. Then that team would be well positioned to draw from up and down the I-5 (Lodi, Stockton, Tracy) and the far east bay suburbs. However, I'm sure there are smart people who have considered and rejected that idea. They're talking a new stadium down by Jack London Square.

There are some that argue that the steroid era offensive boom was actually due more to adding 4 teams in 5 years than the effect of the steroids themselves. I'm not sure I buy that, but it is an argument that's out there.

It had some effect. It wasn't by accident the offense went full loco after the 2nd round of expansion in 1998. Steriods + expansion + smaller parks + hitters learning to hit for power to all fields.

It's not an issue unless you think that clubs shouldn't have to carry 12 or 13 pitchers.

There are 100 more jobs in MLB than there were in 1992, and almost every one of them is a pitcher. The total number of position players in MLB is virtually unchanged during that period.

I don't see where you can chalk that up to expansion. Pitchers have to throw harder to keep hitters at bay, which means they burn through their gas tanks quicker.

Stephen Bronfman (son of a former Expos owner) is spearheading the effort and they've already got initial designs. It would be down in the old factory district along the St. Lawrence, close to the old city and downtown. And the city's mayor is a big supporter, so it would surprise me if they got some government cheese.

You’re wrong. Stadium architecture reached its pinnacle in the 1970’s. Riverfront, Three Rivers, The Vet, how could you not love the sterile environments and poor field views those Mecca’s provided!

According to a 2017 Washington Post article, youth baseball participation dropped from 16.5% to 12.4% from 2008 to 2016 alone.
The percentage of African Americans currently in MLB is 6.7, the lowest it's been since 1957.
American kids don't play baseball like they used to and the influx of international players isn't enough to make up the difference.

The talent will not be there in the future to keep expanding unless you're happy with a severely watered down product.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

How's this for a pipe dream? Instead of a team paying baseball over a billion, have the owner pay a billion into a trust fund and build his own stadium.
