Keith Law just listed Hunter as the third best prospect in baseball in his mid-season update. That escalated quickly.

Any other Reds make the list? I’d imagine Barrero and Lodolo would be on there at a minimum?

    Top 50?

    Lodolo maybe.

Barrero with his recent hot streak, maybe too.

I wonder if Ashcraft makes the back end of Fangraphs' list.

Right now, I'm guessing Greene, Lodolo, Barrero, and Ashcraft, with Hendrick and McLain outside possibilities.

That's a pretty huge jump from preseason lists.

I like Greene's trajectory a lot (especially given the injury). I think he's developed about as well as can be expected.

I also don't expect him to burst onto the scene for the Reds. I think he's still on pace to be a very good starter, but he's still learning to pitch. He's only thrown a 146 IP since being drafted in 2017 (and he hardly pitched his senior year in high school).

He seems to mix dominant starts with so-so starts. The consistency seems to be where he takes his next step.

The fact that Greene made it to AAA after barely 100 innings pitched in the minors, and is holding his own is pretty remarkable. Just looking at the Reds you have Castillio with 460 minor league innings, and Mahle with nearly 600 minor league innings pitched. Greene is on pace to be major league ready in under 200 innings.

    Re: Hunter Greene

I agree it's about consistency now. The flashes of brilliance are there but there are still those batters or innings that can get away from him. Yesterday he was perfect through 3 when a pair of singles started the 4th. I didn't see them so I don't know if they were hard hit, bad luck, or what, but it brought up the #3 hitter who has pretty good stats and mentally I just felt like he might be about to surrender a HR. Low and behold, that's what happened, and a start that was going excellent was now one where he'd surrendered 3 runs.

I definitely think he can pitch out of the Reds bullpen this year and be effective, but will still need more experience under his belt as a starter to be ready to start in the bigs.

I don't think there is any doubt that his FB is ready. Can anyone comment on the sharpness of his breaking ball and pitch mix. There is a tendency for young power pitchers in tough situations to go back to the FB. Experienced hitters know what to look for. Part of learning to pitch is the confidence to go to other pitches in tight situations.

I hope Reds leave Hunter in AAA starting games until the string runs out on the season.

If they give him a September call up, i hope they use him sparinglhy. I don’t think it’s helpful to turn him into a reliever for a period of weeks, just let him retain his starting routine.

Agreed. Even if he starts to dominate AAA, they need to let him get a taste of success. Confidence can’t hurt when he finally makes his debut.

If the Reds are in the thick of a playoff hunt they 100% should IMO bring him up to finish out his last 15-20 innings of whatever his pitch limit it. In the end I don’t see how that would possibly hurt him long term.

If he keeps dominating AAA like he has been since that first start, and we stay in a close playoff race, I think we see him in the pen. There’s just no way he wouldn’t strengthen that unit a good bit.

    Re: Hunter Greene

He’s at 80 IP currently. He threw 100ish last year according to a tweet he had last year. I haven’t sent anything stating another number. I would guess he’s done around 130 at most?
