Just completed 100 innings last week, thankful to the staff and other players that helped me along the way. I’ve grown a lot during this time and I‘m looking forward to 2021! Let’s go

Isn't 100 innings a lot? Luis Castillo leads the Reds with 66. Anyone out there have a reasonable explanation?

He's probably counting "innings" thrown since he started actually throwing for real back in spring training/the shut down/Prasco all together.

Tejay Antone, for example, talked earlier this year about how the Reds told him to try and prepare as a starter during the shut down, so he was throwing 100 pitches every 5th day, simulating 5-ish innings on his "game day". I'd imagine that Greene, and many other pitchers in the organization, did something similar (maybe not 100 pitches for Greene, particularly early on - but he had a plan, approved by the team, to throw on a schedule).

Article came out right after his first start but some really interesting info about Greene, basically Derek Johnson told Hunter the "challenge" (or 'high school' as Hunter puts it) fastball isn't going to be enough and he has to get better at moving it around and locating it. And he focused on sharpening up his breaking pitches and soaked up info from the Reds pitchers. I'd say the early results have been, uh, pretty encouraging.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Hunter Greene is the only player I wouldn't trade for a AS SS this year.

Just signed up for MiLB which is a bargain for $20 BTW. Got around to watching Hunter's last game. Here are my observations. The guy is BIG, listed at 6'5" and 230 and he probably weighs more than that now. His legs and lower body are massive. Really commands his fastball now around the plate and works all the corners. Didn't notice him throwing it up and in to hitters, which maybe he should do occasionally. Basically a 2 pitch pitcher (as far as I could tell) with his slider at around 90mph. Can throw the slider for strikes, rarely bounces it or is far off the strike zone with it. Works quickly, but then again everybody does in the minors. Really has a strong mound presence out there which probably helps him from an intimidation standpoint.

BTW he also was recently named Hottest Prospect by BA who didn't even rank him in their top 100 to start the season...shame, shame.

Unless his slider becomes a kill pitch (ala big unit) he's going to need at least a 3rd option, change is most preferable but a strong sinker or split would be very helpful to keep hitters honest. He comes up trying to pump 100+ by these guys its not going to work as a starter. The good ones will get the timing quickly and tee him up.

I hope he's not throwing a split-fingered pitch. Those can kill elbows-- and Greene's elbow has already gone under the knife.

His main issue is that his changeup isn't off-speed-- it's an 88 - 91 mph "hit me" pitch. He'll have to add movement or slow it down slightly (which will mean telegraphing the pitch). That's part of the issue with extreme heat, btw, and one reason why guys like Chapman stayed in the pen.

Were I a pitching coach, I'd approach him about throwing a two-seamer that can bore into and away from opposing hitters depending on how much pressure he puts on the ball with each finger. That would mean that everything was about the same speed-- which is both a blessing and a curse. If he's tunneling correctly, he'll be dominant. If not, he'll still be hard to hit due to velocity, but those hits will go a long, long way.

    From the BA article:

Greene’s improved slider, which rates as at least a plus pitch and potentially plus-plus, has given hitters something else to worry about, which makes his fastball more worrisome than before.

Agreed, a 2 seamer or a sinker with late movement would be ideal.

Greene just wrote a thank you post on Twitter to the people and the city of Chattanooga. Wonder if he's headed somewhere...

"In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"

    Re: Hunter Greene

This could be interesting. Personally, coming of surgery I would prefer Greene spent the entire season in the minors. But if he does have some success in AAA, it might be worth letting him have a few games out of the Reds bullpen in the 2nd half.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

I would guess that with 40 innings under his belt this year that leaves around 60 more max for the 2021 season. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets 4 or 5 starts in AAA and then gets called up for his last 30 innings or so innings to be pitched with the Reds. I kinda hope we don't go this route because it's been a while since I've had this much optimism about our young SP. I'd probably lean toward letting Greene finish up in AAA this year with the idea that he'll be in the Reds rotation on opening day 2022.

    Re: Hunter Greene

If he dominates in AAA after three starts, I'd call him up to the big leagues. A thrown pitch in AAA is the same as a thrown pitch in MLB when it comes to a player recovering from injury. I do agree with an inning limit, but let it be for meaningful baseball please!
