Nick Krall named new GM

I don’t see this as Dick ceding “power.” Dick is still head of baseball ops, and Krall undoubtedly reports to Dick.

This probably does mean that Dick will have more of a supervisory role on some things, with Krall being hands-on.

The big question is whether Krall will become the hands-on guy in player personnel decisions. Not sure we know that.

1. Legitimately surprised they made this move. At the very least it means DW is feeling enough heat to put a firewall guy in place.

2. Given that Krall's internal, I don't think it means much of a change. Maybe Krall becomes more of the public face and does more of the haggling. I'm guessing Dick still sets the agenda and makes the decisions. At least that's my guess.

3. There is the possibilty they're setting up for a clean sweep in which a new head of baseball ops comes in, hires a new manager and DW gets a comfy do-nothing gig as VP of Nepotistic Operations. I'm not saying that will happen, but the Reds are now in a position of offering someone the whole shebang. We're a mess, fix us.

4. Could be wrong, but I suspect the mockery and derision coming from the national media has the ownership a bit shook. "Hey, they know we suck."

FWIW in past interviews with Dick he has made the comment a couple of times that one of the toughest parts of his job was not seeing the wife and kids as often. Maybe this move gives him a chance to see them more often.

Nick Krall has a pretty typical baseball background - started out in scouting, and moved up gradually. I can't find a ton of information on him beyond that right now.

He was part of the previous palace coup. They call him Nick The Crusher Krall.

Call me crazy, but maybe we should wait until he actually has those new business cards printed before hot taking this move. Not just you, but everyone.
