O Brother and Pulp Fiction were the first to pop into my head. The Pulp Fiction soundtrack was a jukebox fixture before they all went internet.
But for original score:
Drive
*BaseClogger* (07-15-2018)
I agree with drive, and would argue with his comment on 28 days later (I've never seen it) as I can't imagine a movie's soundtrack matching with the scene on film better than drive (though I hear that is the director's thing, and along with the advice above means I should check out more of his work)
O'Brother where art though is great, and I agree with many on here, Singles, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction (and Reservoir Dogs) Forest Gump (even though the official release CD, back when they were a thing, left off several of the best, most iconic songs from that movie, Running on Empty being the biggest "where is that song on here" track.) those would all come to mind pretty quickly.
I'll also throw out:
Pretty in Pink for the mid-80s
The Graduate if you like Simon and Gargunkel
Not my thing, but my sisters love Dirty Dancing
Top Gun/Footloose/CaddyShack, what would an 80s movie soundtrack be without Kenny Loggins
Back to the Future (they showed this up at the pool the other evening, tons of great songs)
Walk the Line (this feels like cheating)
Again, not my thing, but my wife loves Chicago, though originally a play, same could be said of Grease which was mentioned earlier
Stand By Me
Good Morning Vietnam
Posting in the clutch since twenty ought two.
Cable Guy Soundtrack.
LOL...shows my age, but it's the first CD I ever had. I purposely signed up for the "11 CDs for a Penny" deal on the back of a Parade Magazine. All of those CD's came at once, but boy was my Mom pissed when they started to receive past due bills for unpaid CD's that all of a sudden just kept coming every month. Don't think she ever even told my Dad, thank God. (Woulda caught hell if he had)
Anyways, Cable Guy was one of the 11 because I was enamored with Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot." Turns out, the rest of the record is very solid too. One of the great one-hit wonders of the 90's is on it (Primitive Radio Gods track), solo Jerry Cantrell, and I was introduced to the awesomeness that is Jefferson Airplane.

Repo Man is a great 80's L.A. punk rock retrospective.
Ennio Morricone's compositions for the Mission barely beat out John Williams' Star Wars music.
If you are talking about music in the background of a movie, I will go with Stanley Kubrick's 2001 (Ligeti) and Terrance Malick's Tree of Life (Couperin) or New World (Wagner's Vorspiel)
Dirty Dancing
"I tried to play golf, but I found out I wasn't very good." -Joey Votto on his offseason hobby search
An MLB.com reporter asked what one thing Votto couldn’t do. “I can’t skate or play hockey,” Votto said. “Well, I can skate ... but I can’t stop.”

Holiday Inn (Boy am I old) Irving Berlin wrote all the music to this movie from 1944. White Christmas and Easter Parade became standards from this movie.
Reds Fan Since 1971
as a youngster, I was really into the Pulp Fiction soundtrack
