Anyone notice what Vlad Gutierrez has been doing?

There has been a lot of hand wringing about Gutierrez' poor start this year. On June 1st his ERA was 6.75 after a 4 game stretch in which he allowed 14 ER in 18 IP with 5 homers allowed. It looked like the ballyhooed youngster might have imploded but he obviously kept working and made adjustments to his mechanics because in June he made a string of 6 starts that put him right back on the hot prospect list for the Reds:

    6 starts, 36 innings, 17 hits, 34 Ks/8 BB, 6 ER, 3 HRs allowed (5 runs by homer, 1-2 run shot and 2 solos) 1.50 ERA, 0.69 WHIP

If Vlad keeps pitching like this he may be knocking on the door next year.

edited to include 7-7-18 performance, a 3 hit 7 inning 1 run game

I'm staying optimistic that the Reds can get at least 1 effective starter from the trio of Vlad Guitierez, Tony Santillan & Jose Lopez. It's great to see him turning a corner. If he can finish the year strong at AA he should start next year in Louisville. I'm hopeful we'll start seeing those three sprinkled into the staff by this time next year.

Didn't think the Reed thread was a big enough jinx huh

It's nice to see Gutierrez get the ship righted. He doesn't turn 23 until the fall so the nice thing is timeline wise he can afford to repeat AA next year if the Reds think he needs it.

    I hexed him:

    Strike out
    Ground ball single
    Bunt single
Ground out - 1 run scores
    Ground out

    Really nice clutch pitching!

After July 12th start, last 7 starts:
    43 innings, 22 hits, 11 walks, 6 Er, 43 Ks, 3HR allowed
    0.77 WHIP, 1.26 ERA, 4.6 h/9, 9 k/9, 3.9 k/bb

Every start I expect some regresssion, but he's just flat filthy right now

While the outcomes haven't always been there (though they certainly have of late), I think Gutierrez's peripherals suggest he's got a future as a major leaguer. He hasn't thrown a ton of professional innings (~200 IP), but at the very least I think he's a guy you give every opportunity to to figure it out. He's got control, and he can strike guys out. Let him develop.

He also needs to be treated as if he's a year or two younger than he actually is. He missed a couple years of development. If he were 20, we'd be looking at him a lot differently, and that's basically where he is from an experience point of view.

And unless Doug or Kinsm or someone else corrects me. He does not have to be protected on the 40 man roster this winter.

Correct. He does not need to be added until after the 2020 season.

Vlad, Muella, Greene and Santillan can't develop quickly enough.

Why? Stephenson is making a push and the rotation is already filled and they can't find room for him. For a team that really needs to find the guys who will carry it's future, the Reds sure seem more interested in using guys who haven't been any good for a few years instead.

No need to rush these guys, Homer's got this.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

I'd rather they got time to fully develop. I still think Muella ends up bp (albeir chance to be pretty good there) but Gutierrez, Greene and Santillan seem more promising long term than RS, castillo and Romano did to me a couple years ago. Lets not rush them though.

I’d say Gutierrez and Santillan should be ready to compete for rotation spots in 2020. Greene more likely 2021. And that’s barring setbacks.
